Is this worth to make? Homemade spinner.
#327453 - 06/26/14 11:40 AM

I was thinking to have something better that attach to a mouse that spins than what he done. Maybe a good small case fan or burnt graphics card fan? Those will spins better. What you do is make a mount on the fan part that fit into the mouse screw hole. Take something like a plasic lid off of a beef jerkie can and then spy it back. Attach to the fan. Don't have to tear up your mouse to do this.

eta2: To answer your question: You probably could use a fan part... Or anything with a smooth, ball bearing type of rotation. But you may want something a bit heavier so that it has that spinning flywheel momentum to it.

Regarding what the guy did in the video....

Ehm.... What is he going to do when he gets up into the later stages where the aim-line has to go up and down?

Other than that it seems like an excellent idea. But he really didn't need to put that dowel rod into the mouse. Just have it attached to the part where the mouse is put in. As for the up & down (push & pull) motions.... There's probably a few elaborate ways to take care of that.... And it's been so long since I've played dotron, I can't recall if the up and down are analog (since there are multiple lines)... Anyway, it could involve both mouse buttons (digital) or the mouse wheel (analog).

eta: Now that I think about it - a very nice 'Discs of Tron Spinner' had 2 switches for up and down... So it must be digital.

Only thing is Disc of Tron uses a push/pull spinner.

Use either of these two.

I use the apache controls but looks like he doesn't make them anymore.

Not to be snide, but I guess it depends on how much your time is worth or how much you want to tinker. I know I'd spend hours dinking around with it, so I'd rather spend a couple of bucks and get a nice quality spinner.

Granted I'll waste days tinkering with bezel artwork and junk. So, it just depends on your priorities. For me, it's not worth it to make one.

The attached removed pic represents a mouse computer interface device that is placed into a preformed mold.

The disc that is over the mouses light/sensor should be fixed, and attached to the bearing for rotation.

The shaft is push and pull-able. It has 1 lever that pivots when pushed down. The other end of the lever raises and contacts 1 mouse button. The other (arm) moves when lifted/pulled - to press the other mouse button.

While all the fine details can't be represented in this rough MSpaint drawing - it should give a rough idea of what might be possible.

Much better than what I thought.

I have a better representation, if you don't mind.

Tom's idea is pretty clever, but still pretty ghetto. Dedicated hardware, self-made or bought, is the way to go. GGG's spinner is totally worth it. A great piece of gear that I'm glad I bought.

DOT in MAME used to be programmable to use both axes for use with a trackball...um, if you have one of those.
