Human remains were found mixed with the cartridges, that initial studies show is the body of Jimmy Hoffa... a small tidbit of news obviously eclipsed by the more monumental discovery of the ET cartridges.

Is it just me, or is the label on that cart he's holding awfully pristine for something that's been buried in the dirt for thirty years? They also seemed to hit paydirt really quickly. Wasn't it just like last week that they got the permits to start digging? It wouldn't surprise me if it turns out to be a hoax, or maybe even some viral marketing thing for the AVGN movie.

Things don't change much in landfills. Very little air gets to the stuff that's buried so they decompose very, very slowly. They're like smelly, dirty time capsules.

Not really. Garbage is fairly stable in most garbage dumps. Saw a documentary a few years ago they were pulling phone books and newspapers that were a little yellow but 30-40 years old and in pretty good condition.

As to finding them, I saw a ($#@! view-whoring) 2-minute "part 1" video of the dig, wherein they said they had to research and pin down the exact location ahead of time, because they weren't going to be allowed to dig up the whole dump. Further, they were digging down to an expected concrete cap prior to the reveal.
Haven't clicked the link above yet.

Ready for mining. Like Alfred Bester foresaw....or maybe it wasn't him. Can't remember the book title....
