[ANNC] MAME 'virtual cab' widescreen artwork

Hi. Wasn't sure whether to post here or the News Submission forum, but anyway...
Iv'e made some 'virtual cab' artwork specifically to utilize the extra screen space of a widescreen display. It mocks up a view of playing the games in an actual arcade cabinet, complete with shading, shadows, and screen reflection that covers a bottom section of the game screen. All to make it as realistic as possible.
All artwork comes in packs of 10, and is at a resolution of 1920x1080, making it good for displaying on a 1080p TV, too.
Usage notes: * Download and unzip the individual artwork files into your MAME 'artwork' folder. * All artwork has three versions: - Full artwork (default) - Artwork without screen reflection - Artwork without screen reflection and artwork shading These can be selected from the in-game MAME menu, under 'Video Options'. * The monitor bezel is displayed separately as a backdrop layer. You can turn it off/on independently in the 'Video Options' menu. * The game screen is shaped/shaded to the monitor bezel, using a mask image displayed as an overlay. Works especially well (I think) when using the FANTASTIC shader effects available in MAME, but you may need to tweak your horizontal/vertical position/stretch and pincushion, to get the game image to fit the bezel exactly (just like a real monitor :P).
Most of the original artwork I sourced from Mr. Do's excellent artwork archive, so a big thanks to him, and all other contributors!
Enjoy!

Well what your doing is excellent. Cleaning up some of Mr Do's full size raw scans of bezels and such would help the project a bunch.
No pressure though, whatever/whenever you want is fine.

How do I get hold of the full-size raw scans? The ones on Mr Do's WIP page just seem to be low-res images.

I've just got a 22" monitor for my MAME setup, which is great, but I think I should have gone slightly bigger. I guess that 27" monitor would be the business.

Yeap One thing I was wondering. Is it possible to add the gear shift in the outrun artwork? Just the simple one that's in the corner so I can see which gear I'm in

Hi big10p,
I am doing some "virtual cabinet" stuff any I'm playing around with the idea of adding in a bezel similar to what you are doing with the horz_screen_bezel.png and horz_screen_mask.png.
You wouldn't happen to have a high resolution version of the Horz/Vert files would ya? I'm messing with a 4k TV, so trying to get my artwork as high-res as possible.
I have a couple of version like the one here: http://www.mameworld.info/ubbthreads/showthreaded.php?Cat=&Board=artwork&Number=298500
But, I'm thinking I like the way yours fades to black on the outside. It seems like it blends better with the bezels than a greyish monitor bezel (like the above post).
At any rate, nice work! Hopefully you can work on some official stuff.

I don't, sorry. I originally started making the artwork for myself to use when playing MAME on TV with OUYA, so I made all the artwork 1920x1080 for a 1080P TV. I deliberately drew the screen bezel with minimal detail, otherwise I'd find it too distracting, such as the one you link to above.
The idea of my artwork is to focus on the game screen, as you do while actually playing. So, I made vert games full screen height at the correct 3:4 ratio, then kept the same screen size for horizontal games, to keep things consistent. Then, I just wanted to fill in the remaining space on a widescreen. I'm not concerned with showing marquees or CPOs, since you dont see these when actually playing a game. In fact, you're only peripherally aware of the bezel art, but it really does add to the experience, I think. > But, I'm thinking I like the way yours fades to black on the outside. It seems like > it blends better with the bezels than a greyish monitor bezel (like the above post).
The fade is actually on the bezel artwork layer. The screen bezel itself is displayed separately as a backdrop layer, for technical reasons to do with the blend modes MAME uses for different layers. However, it does allow the screen bezel to be turned off/on, as desired.
> At any rate, nice work! Hopefully you can work on some official stuff.
I've contacted Mr. Do about this but haven't been sent any bezel to work on yet.

Hi
Since none of the neo-geo games had bezel art, I'm thinking of including a plain(ish) generic bezel in the next pack, that works for all neo-geo games. Something like the one below. I'm not too sure if I like the matching T-moulding, or not. Thoughts?

I always saw black one on the machines with the black plastic screen boarder. Mr.Do or who ever uses a red one with no black plastic screen boarder. There is two version or more.
In the future if anyone ever get the system to listed 6 games then the new artworks will be added. Right now just for the single game only.

Yeah, I just based my bezel on the red one of Mr. Do's. I thought having bezel art was better than none at all. I just wondered what folk think of the design I did.

Thank you, good work. A little advice, you can save work including "horz_screen_bezel.png" and "horz_screen_mask.png" in "gamename_bezel.png" final assembly. The effect is the same and you save the space occupied by images and writing lines of code in the "gamename.lay" file.

I'm not sure I understand. Overlays (screen mask) are displayed using a multiply blend, and bezels are displayed using an alpha blend. So, I don't see how I can combine them.

There wasn't any writing on the black bezel and red bezel at all. The writing is on the controllers panel, on the sides and marquee only.
I did notice that the controllers panel is missing a letter B on the Neo-Geo artwork that is from Mr.Do website.

[ANNC] MAME generic cab default artwork (widescreen)

Hi
I haven't had time to do a new, full artwork pack recently (will do soon, hopefully) but I was asked if i could do a generic, black cab for games that don't have bezel artwork. So, here it is - one for vertical games, one for horizontal games.
Download big10p MAME default artwork bundle
I decided I wanted to use them as default artwork that automatically gets displayed with games that don't have their own, specific artwork. To get this to work, MAME has to be compiled using the layout files included in the bundle (see below).
I've included a MAME exe (Windows 64-bit) for those not familiar with compiling MAME. Compiling MAME really isn't that difficult - take a look at this excellent tutorial by Mr. Do!
http://mrdo.mameworld.info/compile.php
Contents and usage of bundle:
10 .png image files - unzip all these files (whose names all begin with "default_") into you MAME artwork folder. Note that these files need to stay separate in the artwork folder, and not packaged into a zip like the regular artwork files.
mame64_153_def_art.exe - This a ready compiled version of MAME v.153 for 64-bit Windows, that will display the default artwork. Unzip it into your MAME root folder. You can then rename the file to simply mame64.exe, or whatever, if you wish. It was built using the hi score save patch (hi_153.diff), but that is the only change made to the official source code available at mamedev.org.
vertical.lay horizont.lay - these 2 layout files are only needed if you want to compile MAME yourself. Unzip them to src\emu\layout in your MAME source tree, replacing the existing files there.
Note that some 'special' games that have bezel lamps etc. (e.g. Spy Hunter) will default to using that display. If you want to use my generic cab artwork for these games (without the lamps), you need to select it manually from 'Video Options'. The generic cab artwork is also available in games that have their own artwork. Again, just select from 'Video Options', if you wish.
As usual, there are 3 versions of the artwork, selectable from 'Video Options': Generic Cab - Full artwork (default) Generic Cab (no reflection) - Artwork without the screen reflection Generic Cab (no shading) - Artwork without the screen reflection and other shading.
That's it. Enjoy!

Hello big10p I made a couple on my own from your template and without your help, I couldn't do it.
I'd like very much to have a bezel for the "6 players - dual side by side no gap" X-MEN (xmen6pu). I think this game look killer on my cab but it would be nice to have a filler on top and bottom. Currently there is a big black bar on both (see bellow).
Could you help me?
Also is it ok if I send you those I made for a package? Maybe other can benefits if you judge they are good enough.

Hi Steve
Sorry, I haven't been around here much lately and have only just seen your post. Dual screen games are a bit special but I'll look into it when I get the chance, and see if I can come up with something. Feel free to send me what you have so far, if you like.

OK, it's been a while but I've finally managed to finish pack 15 - available for download in the first post.
P.S. Thanks all for the positive feedback - it really helps with the motivation to carry on doing these.

Thanks. Just a bit short on time to do them - especially as I now have a proper arcade cab, which takes up most of my spare time.

Mr Do's site is just for the full bezel/marquee/cp scans etc. from which most of my packs are based on.

This is fantastic work, I just registered so I could comment!
I hope you continue to release the packs when you have time. Don't know if your keen on requests but Mortal Kombat or NBA Jam would be fan favorites.
Good stuff!

Thanks. I still do the packs when I have the time. The two games you mention don't have bezel artwork, unfortunately - they just seem to have small instruction panels on the bezel.

Thanks for the extra packs Big10p, i used to be on the Ouya forum but sold that a year ago, i now use your packs on my the nvidia shield TV.
Finally got around to start adding a few of my own, all for Vertical SEU's at the minute, of course no official border art is available so i had to make them myself, but since i still use your borders i would post them here for people to download if they want.
The first pack has a border for the following 10 games;
The image defaults to the shaded image upon loading, you will have to change it to the non shaded image (the image i edited for each game).
You can download pack 1 here

Hi
It's good you're offering these to folks as I only do ones that had bezel artwork, originally. I remember you from the ouya forums - I sold mine around the same time as you.

Hi, thanks, yeah i'm not doing any of the games you have done, plus it will be mainly vertical games I'm concentrating on as they stand out a mile without any border!
My first pack was ok, mainly used the same image both sides as its very hard finding images the correct dimensions or trimable! My second pack is coming along better, many games have dif images both sides where possible.

Hi,
How does MAME understand to use the Neo Geo border for all Neo Geo games?
Ive looked in the lay file, the only change of course is to neogeo.lay but is this possible to do this for another mame driver then?
Edit: Well answered my own question, just renamed a lay and zip to 'stvbios' and all the stv games picked it up...good stuff!

Yeah, it looks to be based on BIOS rather than just a per-game basis.

I found a small but significant problem with your bezels you just uploaded. Your bezels cut off some of the gameplay screen.
If you move your aircraft all the way to the left or right of the screen and shoot and then pause the game. Then compare the bezel vs. no bezel and you'll see that some of the gameplay screen is hidden underneath your bezels.
Also, the batrid.zip is incorrectly named. It's supposed to be titled batrider.zip.

I haven't altered any settings in the lay file from the big10p templates, so the originals must have the same issue, personally i havent noticed any major issue regarding gameplay on the edges.
Regarding the batrider filename, its because i have the EU rom of this game.

I have been trying for the last 3 months to build a version of 1.61 with your modifications. I absolutely love the virtual cabinet look, and have even started making modifications to my cabinet to make it look perfect (larger monitor that over-hangs and lines up my actual t-molding with the t-molding on the "virtual cab" perfectly!). After months of trying to get a compiled version of MAME 1.61 with the alternate .lay files (or even at all. on 3 seperate computers. Using nearly every tutorial on compiling a mame build I could find) I am completely inept when it comes to compiling, apparently. I am honestly at my wits end. is there any way I could talk you into compiling a 64bit windows MAME 0.161 build with your default artwork? I would be forever in your debt, and would be happy to make a paypal donation towards the ongoing "virtual cab" project. I understand that you are likely a busy guy, but this has been a hair-pulling experience for me.

Thanks! Not sure if I'll ever get back to doing any more of these, TBH. Kept busy with playing around with my arcade cabs, these days. I know someone else has started doing similar work though, but going for a more super-realistic look than I was.

Thank you for Widescreen artwork (zips). I wanted to reach out the community to see if anyone Space Duel in this widescreen format? I am running Mame4droid on a TV (Nvidia Shield) and these bezels are great.
