Can anyone suggest a backup program for MAME/other files?
#324335 - 04/09/14 12:12 AM

Periodically I connect a USB backup drive to archive MAME, but it gets a bit time consuming to delete the archived MAME folder on the USB drive and replace it with a copy of the new one from the PC (as post ClrMamePro there's often numerous changed files/folders).

So what I'm looking for is some software I can launch myself when I want to (as opposed to a service/mirrored/automated backup) that can compare the MAME folder on my PC and make sure the one on the USB drive is identical (i.e. copy/delete files from the USB drive to make it the same).

This could also be used to backup (for example) a music collection, rather than remembering which files/folders have been added since the last backup.

Any suggestions? Freeware ideally. Just wondering what people (who don't use RAID/NAS drives to backup) use.

Thanks!

Personally I love Create Synchronicity.
http://synchronicity.sourceforge.net/

It's what I use every day. Can run backups scheluded or on demand. Simple to use and configure, but can do one side or two sided mirrors, exclude files or folders, etc. It's also pretty fast.

I use fds, works on Linux/Windows and comes with full source...

Usage would be:

fds d:\mame_src v:\backup\mame_src

This is the command I use all the time in windows vista and up. If you are using XP I think there is a pack you can download from microsoft that has it.

ROBOCOPY D:\MAME Z:\MAME /MIR

First dir is the source directory second is the destination. The MIR bit makes them exactly the same using size and timestamp as the filters. It will delete any files that are removed and add any that are missing and overwrite any that have changed leaving the rest alone. If you are using win7 and up you can add in /MT:4 and it will copy/scan 4 files at a time.

If you are using linux/mac/bsd you can use something like rsync to get the same affect.
