Fixed something new [Re: URherenow]
#324009 - 04/01/14 01:50 PM

Not sure what... but I left my other router connected to the new one and for some reason DHCP was assigning wireless clients the lan-side of the other routers IP address as the router address. I had to mess with both of them. Now that my network seems to be working I get this:

now THAT'S more like it

the RT-N66U really does make a buttload of difference. Now I'm curious what speeds I'll get if I actually turn encryption back on

The DEWALT DWP611PK Premium Compact Router Fixed/Plunge Combo Kit.
It's handy enough for most jobs.

nice...

Are you using the rmerlin firmware or stock?

Also under lan->switch control make sure enable jumbo frame and nat acceleration are on.

That gave me a pretty good bump on local network speeds.

I'm using the latest Shibby build of TomatoUSB.

My problem was not knowing the proper way of setting up the RT-N16 as a bridge. I have it all sorted now.

Will Jumbo frames effect external traffic or just LAN? Not sure where in Tomato to mess with NAT acceleration.

As it is, a few of my devices don't seem to like the 5Ghz network even though they are supposed to be compatible. PS3 is one of them...

BUT: One of my end goals were reached. I streamed a 3D movie from NETFLIX without a hickup!

I'm about 99% sure that the PS3 only has a 2.4GHz radio.

My mistake new [Re: krick]
#324054 - 04/02/14 05:37 AM

It won't connect to my N only network at all. WPA2+PSK AES are my settings, I do use a MAC filter, but it's correctly listed (same MAC filter list is duplicated on my mixed mode network, which connects fine)

I tried a mixed TKIP+AES for a minute and that didn't help

It's annoying but everything is working one way or another.

Wii U and PS4 connect to the N only just fine... iPhones and iPad mini connect to the 5ghs... only the PS3 doesn't like it

The PS3 doesn't support "N" at all. Only "B" or "G".

What's even worse is the PSP which doesn't support WPA2 security either. Luckily, my old ASUS RT-N16 has a setting for "WPA-Auto", I think it's called, which allows the router to fall back to plain WPA for clients that don't support WPA2, but run WPA2 for those that do.

I'm looking at picking up the ASUS RT-AC68U eventually.

I'd probably also pick up something like this to connect my PS3 and TiVo...

Linksys Wireless-AC Universal Media Connector (WUMC710)
http://amzn.com/B0090DX8O8

...mainly because I'm tired of Netflix cutting out on my PS3 whenever someone runs the microwave in the next room. Microwaves interfere with 2.4GHz wireless.

I didn't realize that. Why does the SSID even show up on the list?

The 5ghz and 2.4ghz networks are 2 different wireless networks for that router. Did you name them the same thing in the router setup?

I think krick is right and the ps3 only does 802.11 b/g 2.4ghz. I worked around my ps3 by putting in a netgear wireless router bridge that could handle 5 ghz N and plugging it into the ehternet jack in the back (still only 100mb). Not perfect but better than the 2.4ghz g rate.

For my older stuff I have considered adding another router and put it in a DMZ sort of config. I still have one device kicking around that can only handle WEP. But it would mean adding a 3rd network into the mix for something I use fairly rarely.

When I added in the 5ghz to the mix of my network stuff I just created a new network and added an '_2' on the end of the name so I could tell which one was which.

No, I don't use same SSID's. I have ASUS2_4, ASUS5Ghz (both N only), and kept my RT-N16 on the network with attwifi and no password (only MAC filter) so I could use the streetpass cheating with my 3DS. Right now, that's what my PS3 is connected to but it was fast enough to stream a 3D NETFLIX movie without a hiccup. I guess I'll just stick with that.

Although I could turn my Airport extreme into a wireless bridge on 5gz and hard-wire my PS3, TV, and PS4 to it... I think that's a little bit much though, no? My TV stand is full of clutter as things are without putting the APEx out there too.

Would I need to add my TV's Ethernet MAC to the MAC filter since it's connecting through a wireless bridge? I only want the N66U to be handing out IP addresses.

I think with a wireless bridge, it gets the IP addresses from the router and passes them to the devices. So if you're doing MAC filtering, you'll need to add the mac(s) to the router.

You bastard. It's all your fault. I just broke down and ordered an ASUS RT-AC68U and a Linksys WUMC710.

For both, it cost me $253.57 with shipping from Newegg. Kinda painful, but I've never had a top-of-the-line router before. I've always bought 3-year-old technology (or older) on the cheap. I'm treating myself for once. I'm most likely going to run one of the RMerlin firmware bulds... http://www.lostrealm.ca/tower/node/79

Switched out the network card in my laptop to

from 25-28MB per sec to 32-39MB per sec. nice...

After much waffling back and forth, I decided (at least for now) to use the same SSID and passphrase for both 2.4GHz and 5GHz. Since 5GHz has a lower range than 2.4GHz, this allows dual-radio devices to fall back to 2.4GHz if the 5GHz signal is too weak.

At the moment, as far as I know, the only 5GHz capable device I have is the Linksys WUMC710, which is 5GHz ONLY. So far, it's working great with my TiVo and PS3 attached to it.

Incidentally, I noticed a performance problem with the stock firmware that was installed in my new ASUS RT-AC68U. When I did online bandwidth speed tests from my 2.4 wireless N connected PC or laptop, the highest download speed I could get was around 1.5Mbps instead of the 15Mbps that was getting with my old ASUS RT-N16 router. Something is definitely broken.

The firmware that it shipped with was 3.0.0.4.374_4561.
I just flashed it with Merlin 374.40 alpha 4 (the latest stable build for the RT-AC68U). The problem is totally gone.

Wired connection I'm assuming... So you're using it as a bridge?

The Linksys WUMC710 is a bridge. That's all it does, actually.
The TiVo and PS3 are now directly wired into the WUMC710, and it connects via wireless 5GHz "ac" to my router.
