cave.c slow on my 2nd pc
#322936 - 03/06/14 11:51 PM

Hi,

I'm using the latest Mame with HLSL enabled.

Cave.c games run fine on my desktop. Now I copied the Mame folder over to my 2nd pc, and cave.c games are slow with hlsl.

My main pc is a core 2 duo e8400 3ghz, with 4G ram and an ati radeon 4870.
The other pc is a i5 750 2.66mhzm with 4g ram and an asus GT 240.

From what I can tell, those 2 pc's are similar spec wise, or am I wrong?

What can cause this?

thx

No, the i5 is much better spec wise.

Find the right driver and give it a shot without using HLSL, to see if the video card capabilities might be slowing things down on you.

Disabling HLSL makes those games run smoothly.

But again, it is weird. Does HLSL depends only on GPU? and even if so, Geforce GT 240 is pretty comparable to the radeon hd 4870.

High Level Shader Language runs entirely on the GPU.

No? On paper (and by that I mean Wikipedia) the 4870 is twice as fast as the GT 240.

Other factors play in as well, driver version, OS, resolution, bus speeds and probably more.

I see. I compared them thru gpuboss and the ati got 5.9 and the geforce got 5.6...

Can it be that I don't have some kind of drivers?(directx etc..)

If you're missing parts of DirectX then MAME usually doesn't start at all. But running the DirectX 9 web updater on both PCs can't hurt (Yes, DirectX 9).

About drivers, no idea. Nvidia or AMD probably don't spend much time optimizing their latest drivers for 4-5 year old video cards, so maybe older drivers will perform faster?

Compare HLSL settings on the two PCs. Some settings can really kill performance, especially at high resolutions. For a fair comparison, use the same HLSL settings and resolution on both PCs.
Also both PCs should be running 64-bit MAME on a 64-bit OS.

Now I get it. I just copied over the entire directory from one pc to another, so the settings are the same, but the 2nd pc, has a resolution of 1920x1080, and the faster one has a resolution of 1280x1024, so that must be it.

Is there a workaround besides buying a new gpu?

I guess so. If you want, you could see how they compare if you lower the other one to 1280x1024 as well. There should be a setting in the video card driver control panel that lets you set the lower res with no stretching, so you get a nice 1280x1024 5:4 image with black space around it.

> Is there a workaround besides buying a new gpu?

If you want to use HLSL, not really. I'd just disable HLSL if it really kills performance. Or try to tweak it some more until it doesn't, the default settings are not optimal for everybody. Avoid setting a prescale value above 2 for example, especially on the 1920x1080 display. You can try setting it to 4 or 5 right now to see what I mean..

Obviously the Radeon 4870 should be in the PC with the 1920x1080 display, since that's the faster GPU. So switch GPUs if that's not the case.

Thanks.

I intend to buy a new gpu anyhow.

Recommendations?

I don't keep up with GPUs unless I'm looking to buy one.

But I am very happy with my GTX 660. It runs everything I have nicely at 1920x1080 so far. I don't own any bleeding edge games right now though.

If you're going to upgrade, make sure your power supply is up to it.
