You've been around for four years, you should know that the answer to that is that it'll be released when it's done. Don't bother the devs, they are delicate beings lol
If you need your fix, and want the latest version where Pong doesn't work, HLSL is completely broken and palettes are all screwed up or whatever may happen (everything might work perfectly) then learn how to compile from source like the rest of us junkies.
Then you can pull down development source code and build your own interim MAME or MESS whenever you please, on OS X, some kind of Linux, or Windows. It's not a secret how to do that.
This means though that the only thing you may complain about is compiling errors. And even when asking about compiling errors you may still find yourself going down in flames.

There is always work to do, what benefit is there to have a formal release?
Just checkout svn and build it yourself.

I imagine new release dates are the only time most people can find the latest roms that have been added. That's when rom sites get updated.

Exactly, that's why i stopped doing the svn updates, several games have had new rom dumps,redumped roms,etc. so its a pain trying to play a game then have a rom loading error.
Not complaining just stating why I don't and others i know don't update off of the svn server anymore and of course I understand this is my problem not those of mamedev, just would be nice if the "beta" roms were released every so often.
And yes I am having a major mame withdraw.... I wonder if alcohol would help... naw not as fun....

Yeah, it would be entirely stupid to have to coordinate releases around getting roms distributed.
Just picking a time frame (once per week/fortnight/month) would make far more sense.
However I have no idea who actually distributes them.

A question that may have been valid nearly 15 years ago, but it is now way obsolete these days.

Almost a good comical MAME FAQ material item worth adding to MAME FAQ imo. 
While Pong is likely back in working shape again, it looks like the newly supported CD4066 device could mean either some minor changes in Battle Zone audio or maybe a complete rewrite of entire audio output of Battle Zone. Or maybe a different game altogether, but my guess is Battle Zone audio is next item to be updated.

Yeah is there someone out there we could put a plea of help to who could help us find some of these svn betas ? If this is considered a rom request then please forgive me and delete post.
