Star Rider 3 MAR 2014 :)
#322817 - 03/04/14 06:44 AM

Track data and expander are not hooked up so the racers are flying all over the screen, but I did manage to finish the first two races

Congrats on getting the game working...or at least on the way to being fully working. Laser disc game fans have a reason to cheer seeing this long wanted classic game being emulated.

Interesting stuff - the FMV backdrop doesn't really seem to add that much to it. Could they have done well enough with a rendered track? Maybe the game would've been reliable enough to turn a decent profit if it didn't need the LD player.

That's strictly true of most LD games, aside from Dragon's Lair. M.A.C.H. 3 or Firefox vs. Afterburner, for instance. But the spectacle was the point at the time

Once the expander is working, I think it will be more impressive. It's a really clever use of a laserdisc, IMO. Variable speed, panning, etc.

Trying to render a track would've made it look like Pole Position (ie nothing that hadn't already been done).

Looking good Matt. Why were LD games buggy? Was it the fact that the LD player was running for so long? I remember Dragon's Lair running 24/7 back in the day. Playing and scene searching must have built up a lot of heat within the player. It became buggy in a short time. I believed they changed parts inside to improve it....then it got bad again.

I also remember issues with a Star Rider cab I played also.

Thanks for the updates.

Laserdisc players were unreliable at the best of times. Run it for extended periods in a poorly-ventilated cabinet with constant seeking and it'll be even less reliable.

All FMV games are terrible. The only interesting thing about mad dog mcree is it ran on an a500 with laser disc or a 3do.

I guess that is almost as close to Nintendo WG I'll get.

....that is if Mad Dog Mc Cree ever does get emulated which will be way, way, way....later and then some.

I still hold out hope for WG because it may have seemed way out of reach with some of the non-cpu games being emulated, but Clean Sweep has been done and Highway is on the way of being emulated...maybe a chance.

Add in various forces on the cabinet from playing and the occasional kicking of the cabinet when someone loses and it gets even worse. Same reason games that actually ran off a CD/DVD are rare outside of the 573/Bemani stuff. (Sega's GD-ROM system copies the entire disc to a RAM disk and runs it from there; the optical drive is never active during actual gameplay).

But with the 70's film reel version, the player gets to wear a holster around the waist.

>ps. Those cars look a bit bendy.

Actual look of how Highway appears on video monitor when playing Highway.

The visual look is somewhat similar to Road Champion, but without the goal of having to race against other racing cars.
