However, having said that, this doesn't mean that people can't speak their own languages in the privacy of their own homes, of course. It would be un-American to force that on people in their own homes.
However, in the public sphere, there is an obvious need for a common language. English already fills that role nicely in this great melting pot of a nation we have.
In short, smf, this matters a lot. You vastly underestimate how important this is.

"Yugoslavia" was the result of people drawing arbitrary lines on a map after a world war and was never going to end well. The languages in the country (Serb, Croat, etc.) are virtually identical, not really any more different than US vs British English even though they’re written with different scrips. A lot of the resentment came from trying to force everyone to use the Serb conventions when there was no issue with understanding each other anyway.

For this topic, I'll just refer back to the late owner of Geno's Steaks down in Philadelphia. He had a sign on his restaurant saying "This is America, speak English" and he refused to serve customers who didn't place their orders in English. I give him props for that. As a society, we should be able to choose whether or not to serve a customer if we don't understand a word they say. Let the resulting economics of that decision determine if it's a good choice or not. Eliminate any and all laws that state that you must offer foreign language menus, etc. If you open up a business in an area where you will suffer from not offering foreign language menus, etc., then the economics of the situation will determine if you survive. Don't allow any discrimination laws to get the government involved here. If someone is speaking English that is not able to be understood by those taking the orders, then they won't get served. Why should it matter if it's a different language?

America needs immigrants & you can either choose to integrate with them or not. The advert promoted integration, while you seem to want to marginalise people who speak a different language.
I understand the issues, but stamping your feet isn't going to help. Instead it will have the opposite effect as they won't just disappear. Instead they will form their own communities and not have anything to do with you. At that point your fear that you might become the minority is quite likely to happen.

Eh, no. That's not what's going to turn American into Naziville. It's the laws put in place to stop so-called "terrorists" -- such as checkpoints within freaking state lines (not just at the border of another country), TSA agents at airports conducting illegal (according to the 4th Amendment) searches, the alleged NSA spying/wiretapping, etc. -all in the name of "security".
A side note: it was mentioned somewhere about "gun toting" Americans being stupid. Eh, there is no argument against having a means of self defense. Citizens that speak a foreign language becoming a majority? Now you're just being ridiculous. Although, it is somewhat of a stereotype that 'Mexicans' have a lot of kids. But I doubt you were alluding to that... But children typically pick up a new language easier than their parents. OR, we would be a minority only in those communities... Yeah. That's the only way your statement is viable. In any of the other 95% of the country (apart from these non-English speaking communities) we'd be in the majority.

According to Google, 70% of Latinos are Catholic, and birth control is against the teachings of the Catholic church, so a higher birth rate is to be expected.
The thing that scares me isn't "foreigners". I'm scared of American citizens who are religious (usually Christian) fundamentalist nut-jobs and who also tend to be against birth control and modern education. That's a recipe for disaster in a democracy.

Fundamentalists have been around for centuries. I can't recall any "disasters" that have befallen the country due to Christian fundamentalists... Maybe you can help me with that.
Also, why do you fear them? Are these types of people known to harm or kill people? I'm talking about large groups, not lone individuals. Since there have been some people that have claimed to be under the influence/direction of "Satan" whenever they killed people (so you can't pin it solely on any "Christian").

I never said you should, although you forced the native americans to do just that.
But by embracing diversity you promote integration. The people existed before the advert, maybe after seeing the advert they think "hey maybe we don't need to build our own community". As did the white American's 200 years ago. You can either repeat the process and become the new Native American's, or figure out a way to get along.
It's not the first generation you need to worry about, it's the children. If you can get them to integrate then the future will be ok. If you keep banging on about how immigrants are evil then the parents will make sure that their children hate you too.
You managed to mess up relations with the blacks by bringing them into slavery and then even when that got abolished not letting them into the same places as white people. So I can understand why immigrants would build their own communities, America appears a pretty toxic environment for immigrants. Not everyone is racist, but it's enough of a problem that it will perpetuate until something big is done about it.
The same problems happen in the UK, but we've managed to deal with it a little better. We still have a long way to go though.
