Please help a newb
#321117 - 01/30/14 05:19 AM

I'm a smart guy, but man this whole thing is confusing to a newb. Ive been lurking and reading stuff all over the net. Everyone tells you to do things differently. FAQs describe out of date programs that have been replaced. Please give me some solid advice. Here is my goal:

I would like to get a PC that will boot right into a nice front-end that looks decent and gives the choice of about 50 selected classic games. These may originate from multiple consoles. I want to be able to set it up once and have it work so my kids can use it. No loading emulators and then ROMs etc.

I dont want to try and emulate thousands of games, just a small bunch of the best. If I can get this working well, I'll build a cab for it and be done. I saw something about the hyperspin front end that looked good.

I dont have time to read the code, or get too deep into this. Surely it cant be that complicated? Im actually amazed you cant download a package... front end and games and all, ready to go.

Any help is appreciated. I have honestly read the FAQs etc. and I'm still lost. I downloaded all kinds of stuff from all over the net. Nothing was what I was looking for.

SO I have installed the latest MAMEUI64, but all the Roms I can get hold of are for older versions. The FAQs say the ROMs must match the version of MAME. So do you all run older versions of MAME or do you get ROMs elsewhere?

I have grabbed the a game ROM from two places, dumped the zip in the ROMs folder, opened MAME and nothing is "AVAILABLE". Help?

It's against the rules to talk about it.

You can use ClrMAMEPro to possibly fix or rebuild the ROMs you have and have at least some of them work.

Press F5 to refresh the game list. And read this.

Some games or systems require additional BIOS ROMs. Without those they will not appear in the game list after a refresh even if you have the correct ROMs for the game itself.

Another thing that's important to understand is the concept of "clone" and "parent" rom sets.

Clone sets will not show up in the game list if you don't have the parent set. For example you need dkong.zip in order to load Crazy Kong or any of the other clones.

That's because you are missing files that are required for that particular game or system.

Use the 'audit' function to know more.

Red, most front ends allow you to run multiple versions of MAME, just setting each version up as its own stand-alone emulator. If you have old stuff, make due with different mame versions. It's a work around idea for you.

He said 50 games and if I understood correctly some of those will be console games. How hard can it be to google what, 20 arcade classics for the latest version of MAME?
ROMs for the classics don't tend to change much.

If he gave up on typing mame galaga into google it's unlikely that he will want to do what you suggest....
