Firmware 7.6.2 and above glitches such that airport extreme and related networks can't use FTP without crashing the wifi network it provides.
Did Apple know this... nope. After two hours on the phone with tech support their solution was to call my FTP software company. But multiple FTP clients all have the same issue all of a sudden? The only common thread is airport firmware, and ANY FTP.
I didn't call.
I played with firmware, and rolled my network back from 7.6.4 to 7.6.3, then to 7.6.2, finally to 7.6.1 and bingo... ftp works again.
So I called Apple support to point this out... the issue isn't just Cyberduck, or Filezilla, or any specific FTP client. The problem is with the firmware updates starting with 7.6.2. For some reason the agent argued with me for sometime,so I jumped through every hoop he requested I jump thru... updated firmware to 7.6.4, updated my ftp client, reset this and that... until he was convinced I was right. Yes, another hour on the phone. But he finally agreed that something broke starting with 7.6.2. I'm surprised this isn't lighting up their tech support center. How many Airport Firmware users use FTP? I would guess millions.
Edit: one thing he did teach me was an easy way to roll back the firmware. On your Airport Utility, left click on the router icon, which should bring up it's info. Option plus left click on the verion number brings up a drop down menu, and simply choose an older version. WOW! Wish I knew that when I did it the hard way. Tip for anyone who is having ftp problems on their airport wifi.

Just a helpful bump of this extremely useful post.
Unbeknownst to me, several months ago Gatinha (I know, I'm amazed she did this too) upgraded the OS on our Airport Extreme router from 7.6.1 to 7.6.4.
If you read the OP you'll realize why I haven't been able to successfully ftp for month now, despite all my trouble shooting.
So today a lightbulb went on! Hey.... last time I had similar issues, I had to regress the Airport Extreme OS... maybe the old 7.6.1 is too old, and there's a new update/fix... so I check it's OS version.
What the hell... it's 7.6.4 somehow. Whch is the newest... and the one known to kill ftp's.
"Oh, I updated it months ago... it was out of date."
Ah. Problem solved. Can't blame her, I'm impressed she updated.
Regressed to 7.6.1 and boom, my ftp programs work again. See OP.
Man. Do old problems sure know how to rear up and harass you.

I'm very impressed that your better half updated the router's firmware of her own accord. I'm usually handed something broken and simply told "Fix this.". You should really refrain from referring to her as "the old problem" something about flies and honey here.

Im sure they have been receiving calls on it but you know apple... its never their fault. case in point, look at their phone awhile back that had the antenna problem.
had a good friend of mine run out and buy one and then b#tch because he couldn't get a good signal when using it. Like your journey he was told it was probably his phone providers problem..

I wouldn't let anyone in the house not specifically trained by me, or who didn't have similar or better 'credentials', update anything.
As for reporting the problem, I would've told them to get fucked if they requested me to repeat it again for their edification. Literally. I'dve told 'em to get fucked. Have.
