Better card ATI 3D Rage ii vs. Jaton 3D Force G32
#319240 - 12/24/13 11:29 PM

Ive recieved the majority all my computer parts and am waiting for the UPS guy to deliver my PSU to put it all together. I have visited several forums that recommended these two graphics cards for my Mame arcade cabinet. I will be running an arcade monitor. As far as the system I ordered the following:
ASRock H77m mother board
i5 CPU
x2 Ripjaw 2GB DDR
WD 500 GB hard drive

I have both graphics cards. Which would be best?

You're kidding, right?

First off, I think both of those cards are AGP. The Jaton 3D Force G32 uses the Trident Blade chipset, which was released in 1999, I think. The ATI 3D Rage II is even older from around 1996 or so. I don't think either of them has driver support under XP or newer operating systems. Assuming they are PCI, they both have really small amounts of video memory compared to modern cards, so I'm not sure how well they'd work with recent builds of MAME.

My advice?

Pick up a used ATI X300/X600 PCIe card off of Ebay, then use Calamity's modified ATI drivers with GroovyMAME. Check out the links in my signature for more info on GroovyMAME and the modified drivers. For using MAME with an arcade monitor, GroovyMAME is the only way to go.

If you want to go with a newer card, another option is picking up a used ATI Radeon 4000 series PCIe card. Just avoid the ones that are based on "mobile" chipsets. I know people have had problems with some of the Radeon HD 4350 models. None of the newer ATI HD cards (5000 series, 6000 series, etc...) will work, so don't bother.

Either way, I HIGHLY recommend picking up a copy of Windows XP 64-bit Edition. You'll get a sizable performance boost by using a 64-bit operating system and a 64-bit version of MAME (or GroovyMAME). Windows 7 is not very friendly for use with arcade monitors.

Hows is the ATI Radeon HD 4890? Couldn't find if it had a mobile chip set.

That should work. I only think the lower models were available as mobile chips.

There's some info in this thread about the 4890...

Thanks krik. Kinda post now. The psu that the ups man just dropped off doesn't work.... so I got some time to get the right graphics card.
