Switch Res

Is it possible... (HOW is it possible?)... to move into a resolution and yet have a game render in its native res without scaling?
Like, switch to 640x480 but have a game display, albeit it small and not filling the screen, at 320x240?
Ideally, I'd like to have my CRT jump to 256x240 but display a game that is natively 256x224 and just have some extra black borders. No scaling whatsoever.
Enforce aspect? No Stretch to Fit? No hardware stretch? What are the switches (or .ini lines)? I've tried some stuff but can't make it do this yet.

What? I guess you struck out with soft15 and GroovyMAME?
Far as I know, with a non-digital monitor/multisync, you have two options: manually adjust for each resolution type; set the geometry to the largest game you'll run, and everything else will display inside that. How I have my dedicated vertical set up. If you've a 27" monitor, the 'dead' space is fairly negligible.

wait, you're leaving something out...
I think my largest resolution is probably Tapper (etc) 512x480?
So... how do I run at one res and have everything display its contents inside this? It seems quite doable and I think i've already done it some how, some way, in the past.

Well, I figured out a workaround for the time being. It really seems you should easily be able to disable stretching. Keep aspect and HWStretch don't seem to do the trick.
So, for 256x224 games rendered at 256x240, I've changed the Vertical Stretch slider to 0.934 since 224 is 93% of 240.
When I hit this sweet spot, screen detail just locks on into a crisp focus and everything even gets 10-20% brighter since it's no longer being scaled. Hello, native resolution!

I have my desktop set for the resolution of my front end - 640x240. Pretty much anything vertically fits inside that.
Set yours to 512x480. Vector games may be out, though. Depending on the person, they're fairly to not playable.
