Emulators for Japanese i-Mode/iアプリ mobile phone games?
#314368 - 09/11/13 06:29 AM

I was trying to think of the best place to ask such a question, and this is the best resource I know for this type of information, so even though it's a longshot, I figured I'd ask.

I'm looking to find a way to emulate many of the games that were published for Japanese mobile phones before the whole iPhone/Android/etc. revolution. I know there were a number of platforms, but the i-Mode type seems to be the most common.

The reason I'm asking is because I am aware that many big publishers such as Namco, Capcom, and Konami all published remakes of old NES (Famicom) games, sometimes with updated graphics. My knowledge of Japanese is extremely limited, so it's difficult for me to learn more about these games without playing them, and I was hoping I might find a way to do that. Truth be told, I don't even have any of the games yet, and I wouldn't know where to begin looking, but I was wondering if anyone on this board had any knowledge of this kind of thing, and could point me in the right direction.

Thanks very much for anyone's help.

iMode games are written in a very wierd (and crap) flavor of Java called DoJa (I know this because I used to own a Motorola E378i phone which had iMode and DoJa support).
I haven't seen anything that can run DoJa applets except for DoJa phones.

I'm in the same boat. Ive been desperately looking for some kind of iMode emulator so I can play Triggerheart Exelica on my phone.

I found this:

It appears to be a full blown iMode emulator but the catch is getting it outside of Japan. I struggled with various proxies and play store modifications and I cant get access to it through the play store. If you do manage to get ahold of it somehow please let me know!

Not sitting in front of a Windows machine so I can't test what this is about but NTTdocomo offers something:

http://www.nttdocomo.co.jp/english/service/developer/make/content/iappli/tool/doja/doja51/index.html

Quote:

Description
"iαppli Development Kit for DoJa-5.1" is a tool that supports i-αppli development for DoJa-5.1 Profile. This tool supports i-αppli builds and emulation on a PC.

This tool creates only basic i-αppli for DoJa-5.1 Profile and does not provide functions to emulate the Look & Feel of each mobile phone manufacturer.

i-αppli operations may vary from the emulator and the actual handset. Please run final operation checks on an actual handset.

The runtime enviroment for developing trusted i-αppli (i-αppli DX) is provided in the emulator. However, content providers who are not listed in the i-mode menu and dmarket (i-mode) cannot distribute i-αppli content utilizing trusted i-αppli functions.

Use this emulator for building content compatible with DoJa Profiles in a Windows® 7 environment.

I hope this helps.
