I must say, effects in 1920s movies were often a bit lacking.

Received some years back a set of Alfred Hitchcock movies, being his early work.
1929 saw "Blackmail," historic for starting out as a silent film, then being changed to a talkie early in production (the first scenes are music only).
I've just watched Alice kill this guy, using a large knife that very noticeably drew not a drop of blood. He actually has the blade in the shot for some time, being obstinately shiny.
Ah well, it is what it was.

Say what you will about Hitchcock, but there are some movies from the 1920's that still got it right, even with limited technology and effects
