Recording MAME sessions
#313571 - 08/28/13 06:11 PM

Hi,

As a MAME newbie I'm just getting to grips with it and lovin reliving childhood memories of classic 80s video games.

My problem is that I can't record a game playing session so that I can share with friends and upload to YouTube. I'm using MAMEUI64 and during a game I'm hitting left shift and F12 to record (then again to stop) but it doesn't seem to do anything and if it does I can't find the movie file anywhere.

I know I'm probably being stupid - please forgive! Any help, tips and advice would be massively appreciated.

Thanks

Shift+F12 will start or stop recording an MNG fine, which is basically an animated PNG, and as such, has no audio. You can find the recorded MNG file in the snap/ folder, being the driver you're currently running.

To record an AVI, you must use -aviwrite (there should be an equivalant option in MAMEUI), but be warned, this will create a huge file as the AVI is uncompressed. Having your HD formatted using FAT32 will be unhelpful, due to FAT32's file size limit of 2GB. NTFS is the better option here. After recording, you can use a video editor or converter, such as avidemux or Super, to convert the AVI to a compressed format.

I'd like to add before you do any video recording, you should play whatever you want normally and save your input with -record filename.inp, so you can play the game without the lagging the video recording can/will likely cause. Simply use -playback filename.inp along with the video writing commands to use it.
