There appears to be a sound issue with the galaxian driver; Moon Cresta/Galaxian both jumping.
Anyone else experiencing this?

I am not experiencing this behavior. Without more information, I can only guess your computer cannot handle the discrete sounds added over the years to these games.

I shouldn't have a problem with a X4 620 Athlon processor with 8gb RAM; this seems to be a problem recently surfaced.
When playing Galaxian the shooting sound sometimes comes in late as if there is an interruption.

Ok I've found the culprit - I had triple buffering set - speed stayed at 99%. Now 100% with no sound jumping. This is strange as I've used this setting as my default to prevent screen tearing (e.g. in Bank Panic).
Could an upgrade to Win 8 be the reason as I have to use the default windows graphics driver for my ATI Radeon 4600 (Catalyst no longer supports my card)???
EDIT: Setting triple buffer for Bank Panic makes it run at 98% with sound jumps. Any ideas? My processor runs at 2.6 Ghz

You sure it's not a screen refresh rate problem on your monitor? Those run at 60.606061 Hz.

Under MAME.INI Instead of setting this...
# FULL SCREEN OPTIONS # triplebuffer 1
Leave it like this...
# FULL SCREEN OPTIONS # triplebuffer 0
And try setting this instead...
# WINDOWS VIDEO OPTIONS # waitvsync 1
See if that works for you.
