I use them as a thought trailing off and/or a longer pause than usual (I try as much as possible to write like I speak). A comma is normally used where you would take a breath, but an intentional pause... gets the ellipses

Hmm. Thought I'd replied to OP, wasn't paying attention. Yeah, not you. I don't care how someone who isn't telling other people how to use ellipses uses an ellipsis. Though overuse is a bad thing....
