Using Unsupported Buttons
#312114 - 07/28/13 12:01 PM

Hello, I am new to MAME and I have a question regarding controls.

Basically I am trying to use a six button gamepad with a Neo Geo game, which only officially has four buttons on its controller. Is there some way I can use the extra two buttons? Because when I go into the tab menu to configure controls specific to the game, there is only the directional pad and buttons 1 through 4, leaving me with no place to assign new things to the other two buttons that my gamepad has.

What I'd like to do is something like this, if it makes any sense:

(3) (4) (3&4)
(1) (2) (1&2)
(Where the Neo Geo only has 1,2,3,4, I'd like the two extra buttons to push 1 and 2, 3 and 4)

yes it's possible, see this link below:
(in the example, instead of using the 'x' key on the keyboard, you would be using one of your two spare gamepad buttons)

Hey, I never realized that, grog. Great tip!

Did you just never know the technical fact that MAME can map one game button to multiple keys on the keyboard? Or did you in fact never get the idea that this feature can be used for making the controls more simple?

No, I knew you could bind multiple buttons onto one key, but I couldn't figure out how to put those multiple binds onto a button on a gamepad that has more buttons than the game officially recognizes. And thank you, Grog, that was exactly what I was looking for.

It is also possible to use the Mame button configuration settings to make an 8 way joystick not recognize diagonals, or in the case of Q-bert, only recognize diagonals instead of NSEW. If memory serves, you first tell the setting the true way you want (Up, Down etc...) and then hit the direction you do NOT want twice in rapid succession (diagonals),

This is great for people who have an X-Arcade, HotRod or similar to be able to play 4 way games like Pac-Man and Donkey Kong without having to use switchable joysticks.

505 already answered. But, yeah, sometimes you are too accommodated to test things... That's my case.
