SegaSonic the Hedgehog flip issue?

I had a quick look on Mametesters for this but couldn't see it at first glance. I was messing about in the test menu in the game and when you flip the screen in the test menu all the text goes garbled and unreadable. Flipping it back makes it all work fine however.

Another screenshot. Happens in game too even after a restart.
I forgot to mention this is a brand new install of MAME so no NV-RAM

The driver has the imperfect graphics flag and it covers all issues related to graphics including the flip screen fitness. The system is detecting the flip screen, just not presenting the graphics accurately. To be fair, it might be worth noting in the source.
