Trouble with Super Street Fighter 2: Turbo (Missing ROM or CHD)
#311795 - 07/23/13 08:49 AM

I downloaded the ssf2t.zip ROM for the game, had some troubles with it (the usual ROM or CHD missing), and then realised I needed to download a parent ROM.

Downloaded the one I found out I needed through a quick google search (ssf2.zip), but got the same error.

Then I tried clrmamepro, which I'm still new with, but it downloaded what appears to be a file from the Japanese version of Turbo. I tried to play again, but still got the error...

Finally, another search told me that I needed a clone version as well as the "World" version of the ROM I had downloaded. Tried to play it again... and got the same error...

I'm really not sure what to do, what ROM's or files will I need to make this work? I didn't think it would be this hard just to play some Street Fighter.

Thanks in advance for any help!

Be sure to consult the RULES because your post is kinda borderline according to the site's rules here.

That being said, I'll try and help you

You can use the -listroms or -verifyroms command for some additional information.

I suspect you are lacking the updated qsound.bin because it has recently changed.

An example using mame64.exe

Most likely missing that one.

Ah, okay, so it's just a matter of finding the correct qsound.bin? Thanks guys, and sorry if this nearly broke the rules :P

Darn, now I have a new problem!

I found a QSound.bin file, put it in the roms directory, and now it works! However, I get no sound whatsoever, I'm guessing it's to do with the qsound file, but I'm not sure...

EDIT: Please ignore my stupidity, I'm 99% sure I didn't have my headphones plugged in...

For a given set to play MAME checks on startup if all the correct ROMs are there and otherwise it wouldn't play. MAME all properly set-up?

I had similar problems with SF2 (nearly all versions) too. It was very frustrating.

I had the roms and I even had a version of mame that they worked on but I wanted a version of mame with HLSL to play sf2 because it didn't look authentic on my lcd monitor. In fact, it looked so bad that I didn't want to play it at all. Without image enhancements, SF2 looks nothing like it did in the arcades on a real CRT monitor.

Later versions of mame, even ones that don't say they have HLSL, seem to have better options for image enhancement but I was stuck with an early build.

My understanding of the reason is that, in newer versions of mame, more features of the game are emulated so it needs more files that were not included in earlier versions of the game because there was no point or it wasn't possible etc. There is no option to turn the extra features off so if you don't have all the files it looks for, they don't work at all unless you get an older version of mame that doesn't look for them.

For most people, the list of missing files is not that helpful because they have no way of finding them, even if they own the original PCB (like I do with SF2 champion edition). I have not seen any sites that list which files are in the zip folders of each game and few which even tell you what version of mame they are compatible with.

The best solution is to find a source of roms for later mame builds, or use an older mame version. I searched for a while but eventually, I found a source of roms that was updated in August 2014 and work on almost all versions of mame.

This forum seems to have very strict rules about naming names so I will respect that. There are other forums where that information exists although a lot don't like talk about sites to download roms (I am not sure what they think people use mame for). The one I found wasn't one that I had heard of before and it was all in French but they had the latest versions that I have seen anywhere and I haven't found any US sites with roms that are so up to date.

Most of the time, when I asked for help, I was directed to a site that had roms that still didn't work so patience is a plus!

Anyway, now I have all versions of SF2 that work on all of the latest mame builds including the one with HLSL that I wanted to use.

Another way, apparently, is if you have a few versions of the rom that won't work, you can double click on them to see what files are in their zip folder. There is a chance that merging 2 versions may give you one complete version that works but I have never been able to make that work myself.

The easiest solution is to use an older version of mame and buy CRT tv to run it on so you don't need to worry about all of the simulated CRT monitor features on newer builds. From what I have seen, the extra features in newer mame builds are rarely worth the problems you have in finding updated roms. Once the game works properly, I don't care if dip switch 2 is emulated properly or not, but that's just my opinion. Out of 140 games, 115 worked on my oldest mame 32 and less than 30 worked on any other version (until I found the new source).

The sound on ssf2 works fine on my version. If missing files were the problem, you usually get an error message telling you that, if it loads at all. Look in the game properties menu. It has an option to turn the sound on an off in there. If that is not it and sound works for other games then maybe you need a different version of mame.

Ssf2 didn't work on my oldest mame build, even though all other versions of sf2 did. Ssf2 works fine on all 64bit versions of mame that I have tried though. Ironically, I had no issues with that game. It was champion edition and Hyper Fighting that I couldn't get to work and they were the ones I wanted to play the most. SSF2 was never as much fun for me. I hated the new characters.

Putting myself in your shoes (which is where I was until recently), my post isn't very helpful but it is as helpful as I can be without breaking the forum rules. I think this might be the wrong place to ask this kind of question.
