Thoughts? E8600 or Q9550 CPU
#311693 - 07/20/13 02:58 PM

Motherboard will support either...looking to bump the performance of newer games so your thoughts on the performance of the E8600 Core 2 at 3.3Ghz vice the Q9550 quad at 2.83Ghz for running Mame..especially the likes of California Speed, Off Road or CarnEvil. Thanks.

The E8600 is going to have a slight edge in single threaded applications and a huge edge in power efficiency. Multi-threaded ops and pretty much everything else goes to the Q9550.

The E8600 would probably be the slightly better choice for a MAME rig IMO, but I'd go with the Q9550.

This is for a dedicated Mame cabinet, so no other use for the computer (ie...gaming ,browsing, etc) but for that.

Ended up going with the E8600 and so far I am very happy. Carnevil, Area 51, Tekken3, Virtua Racing and all the Laserdisc games are playing and sounding very smooth. Nice little $55 upgrade from the E6550.

Curious...

Are you running your E8600 stock or overclocked? The reason that I ask, is that I'm running an E8500 stock due to limitations of not being able to overclock in my BIOS. Runs everything for the most part, but NFL Blitz still stutters just a bit. If you fire up the Blitz games, do they play smooth with your E8600?

Thanks,
Jason

NFL Blitz 99 runs slightly stuttered and I have not tried to overclock the CPU.
