I had the scanner going the entire day that day, it was more riveting than any TV drama I've ever seen. They were setting up to take him down right as the babies had to go to bed, and I was doing everything I could to hold them off so I didn't miss anything. Finally we had to put them down, but I managed to get back to the scanner before anything happened. You could hear the applause in the background of someone's transmission when they finally marched him out.

I heard two weird things on the scanner that day, that I still kind of wonder about. At about 11 o'clock that morning, they had an older guy on the ground on Arsenal St. with some kind of suspicious device on him. Everyone was keeping their distance, and they brought in two bomb robots to investigate. Shortly after that, there was no more mention of it. I assume it was a false alarm, but I never heard anything about who the guy was or what he had that freaked everyone out so much.

The other strange thing was right after I put the scanner back on, when they found him in the boat. I had turned it off to watch the news when they called the all clear, then shooting started up about five minutes later. When I put the scanner back on, I caught the end of a transmission saying something about firing blanks. I guess it makes sense that they were trying to flush him out, but I never heard anything about that tactic in any of the news reports.

I have an old portable Radio Shack scanner I bought new a couple decades ago. Reminds me I need to find it and see if it still works. Can't remember why I bought it but I remember it was expensive and seems like a silly purchase now. Listening to that feed brought back all the police lingo I got accostomed to like "Adam Robert", etc.

I don't understand why the one guy kept warning everyone about open mics, though. I know they wanted to avoid unnecessary chatter, maybe they were afraid someone would say the wrong thing.

I think it was mainly about interference. Scanners will get "stuck" on a channel where someone is broadcasting an open mic. If someone is monitoring multiple frequencies (and there were several in use that day), they could miss important traffic on another channel.
