You may want to go ahead and download the mandatory new launcher, and maybe drop it into your Minecraft folder, to get on top of the release.
It allows you to play the current version, or snapshots, or the 1.6p version, through a DLB, and set up multiple profiles and accounts.
I need to go find a river and mine up all the clay before people realize it can be colored.

They didn't remove him once, several versions ago, and it wasn't pretty.

There is a 1.6.1 right now, but there will be a 1.6.2 soon (days) to fix a long-standing issue (or at least try to).
If you aren't being told about 1.6, you need to get the new launcher.
