Hey guys. HlSl doesn't show in the recent version on my Windows 8 PC after it's been turned on and I can't figure out the problem. I tryed both versions 86 and 64 but to no avail. Is HLSL compatible on Windows 8?

I’m convinced Mario is a hobo.
He wakes up everyday in the same clothes, runs around in sewers, and collects coins for a living.
At the end of the day, he uses the coins to buy mushrooms

go into ini/Mame.ini and set 'hlsl_enable' to 1 instead of 0. It is about 1/2 way down the page.

Yes, it works fine.

That's already known. If you don't have hlsl enabled, the blue tint doesn't work. Same with battle zone & other games

Thanks Joey. Ill give it a try. Maybe that's it since it's a new PC.

I think this may be something a bit worse than out-of-date drivers.
I've installed the DirectX runtimes on Windows 8 Pro x64, and made sure my graphics drivers are of the latest stable variety.
If I force-enable hlsl, it gives me the following:
Code:
Unable to compile shader (unspecified reason) Unable to initialize Direct3D. 0028BD38: 014C3C65 (not found) 0028BE68: 014C0E59 (not found) 0028BFD8: 014BDD8E (not found) 0028C158: 01CC5C55 (not found) 0028C208: 01CC6CE4 (not found) 0028F8A8: 01C16F9B (not found) 0028FB28: 01D67E87 (not found) 0028FE78: 014BFB29 (not found) 0028FE84: 02161A90 (not found) 0028FEB8: 03406843 (not found) 0028FF84: 0040140B (not found) 0028FF90: 7529850D (BaseThreadInitThunk+0x000e) 0028FFD4: 77A7BF39 (RtlInitializeExceptionChain+0x0085) 0028FFEC: 77A7BF0C (RtlInitializeExceptionChain+0x0058) Unable to complete window creation

You're missing the latest shader files. Are you pulling SVN, or did you download an official binary?

Okay, that was easy. Needed to pull in the shaders from the sources. That takes care of that error, but it replaces it with a new one any time I use have hlsl force enabled
Code:
----------------------------------------------------- Exception at EIP=014DC30F (not found): INTEGER DIVIDE BY ZERO ----------------------------------------------------- EAX=7E7E7E7F EBX=094F5208 ECX=135E7008 EDX=00000000 ESI=158F2948 EDI=0BBE9020 EBP=0BBE9118 ESP=0B6CF818 ----------------------------------------------------- Stack crawl: 0B6CF838: 014DC30F (not found) 00000000: 5FFA1BE2 (OpenAdapter+0x2f2f2)
Running the debug version of MAME through gdb gives me this:
Code:
Program received signal SIGFPE, Arithmetic exception. [Switching to Thread 9636.0x221c] 0x0000000003c7eefa in d3d::texture_info::mask_frame_count (this=0x44667198, mask=0) at src/osd/windows/d3dcomm.h:169 169 void mask_frame_count(int mask) { m_cur_frame %= mask; }

Have you created a fresh mame.ini (mame64 -cc) with 149 version?

Yes, I used mame64 -cc. It didn't work. Also manually wiped all ini files in the same directory as mame and the ini and cfg subdirectories. No help there either.
