Any of the following...
Get a snack, something sweet and/or crunchy. I suppose something hot/spicy could also do the trick.
Walk around.
Drink something with caffeine in it.
Play a game that requires my attention or makes me scared/excited.
Last resorts?
Exercise vigorously.
Put a rubberband around your hand, snap it on the back side so it hurts.
Avoid...
Repetitive tasks
Reading... Oopsie.
Of course, this coming from someone that needs to be awake at that hour.
If you need to be asleep? Go to bed?
There are other things that could be done, but they need not be mentioned.

Oh yeah. If you're lying there with your eyes closed... Hopefully no thoughts are racing through your head. It might help to breathe deep and slowly. Concentrate on the darkness you see underneath your eyelids, as if you're looking into it afar off. You might begin to see hypnagogic images. Sometimes I can make out sharp but black and white / grayed images. I guess it gets my attention and it fades. I need to just (be able to) let the experience happen.
From what I've read - these images can gain color and or light...? Could be quite trippy. The key is to let your body fall asleep while keeping your mind awake.

I get those when I'm about to fall asleep as well. Sometimes blinding white, or colors flash but I'm in a completely dark room. Sometimes there are shapes, or a quick image of someone's face but they fade as quickly as they come.
Like you said, you just have to let them happen...if you start to focus or concentrate on them it doesn't happen.
I actually look forward to it before I fall asleep, kind of like a laser show.

Remembering that your mates will shave parts of your body and colour them green should be enough motivation to stay awake!
If not, prepare to look a twat for a few weeks!

Sorry Beatles, best I can do on the "fix a drink" front right now is dump a packet of ice tea mix in a water bottle.
Ah. Lee Dorsey is Working in the Coal Mine. Bye.
