Recommendations on an external HardDrive?
#308723 - 05/15/13 08:47 PM

Something in the 500 GB range.

It's past time I made a system image for my laptop. I may use it to record some gameplay movies too.

The problem with external drives is most of the time they don't tell you exactly what drive is inside the enclosure. Probably because they use different hard drives.

I like to know what I'm buying, so if it's just for storage I'd research and buy a "green" drive with good reviews, then buy an enclosure for it separately.

Exactly what I've done and been using for years. 500GB drive in a USB enclosure. Problem-free backups since I bought them in 2009. Before that, I did the same with a worse enclosure and smaller drive for the previous computer I had. That first enclosure I got back in 2005 did work, but did have the odd problem, so I guess build quality might have improved over time.

Ended up ordering these...

The enclosure might be a bit much.... or could've had a fan.

Anyway, thanks for the advice.

Here it comes - you should have bought an enclosure with USB 3.0. It's backwards compatible.

This one has a slight ED-209 vibe going for it:

"Should have bought" as in: I'm in trouble here?

Or, it would be slightly better?

Hehe, no.

> Or, it would be slightly better?

If you don't have any USB 3 ports there's no difference, but it matters for your future motherboard, or if you take your drive somewhere where there's an USB 3 port to hook it up to.

Quote from the USB wiki:
"USB 3.0 has transmission speeds of up to 5 Gbit/s, which is 10 times faster than USB 2.0 (480 Mbit/s) before taking into account that the former is full duplex and the latter is half duplex, giving USB 3.0 the potential total bandwidth if utilized both ways to 20 times that of USB 2.0."

Even if your drive is only 5400 RPM, it's still held back by USB 2.0. With USB 3 you could copy your files as fast as the drive will allow.

Maybe someone who's good with numbers can provide some theoretical speeds.

For the HD enclosure...

Instruction Book, Pg 1

System Requirements

  • 3.5" SATA hard drive
  • An available (nearby) power outlet
  • A host PC or Mac computer system with an available USB port
  • Mac OS 9.0 and up, and Linux

Eh, I have Win7....... (feel free to laugh here, I know I would )

I don't even see it as an available drive. Well, I did see it as a device, but I wasn't able to do anything with it.

*sigh* fml

Oh well. If this means I can return it and get something with the whiz-bang USB 3.0 then I guess this is a good thing.

EDIT: On the site..

I know I'm not that savy with computers/hardware. I must've assumed this was going to be more straightforward.

I'm open to any suggestions.
