Upgraded my computer today. Wow!
#308267 - 05/04/13 06:16 AM

I finally took the plunge and upgraded my computer for the first time since 2008.
I spent about $400

Here's the new parts...

ASUS P8Z77-M LGA 1155 Intel Z77 HDMI SATA 6Gb/s USB 3.0 Micro ATX Intel Motherboard
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813131832

Intel Core i5-2500K Sandy Bridge 3.3GHz (3.7GHz Turbo Boost) LGA 1155 95W Quad-Core Desktop Processor Intel HD Graphics 3000 BX80623I52500K
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819115072

G.SKILL Ripjaws Series 8GB (2 x 4GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1600 (PC3 12800) Desktop Memory Model F3-12800CL9D-8GBRL
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820231314

After I got it all put together I decided to give the ASUS automatic overclocking utility that comes with the motherboard a try to see what it could do. I clicked a button in the windows utility, then waited for about 5 minutes or so while it rebooted itself about 20 times until settling on an overclock of 4.28 GHz. That's like a 29% overclock.

I'm running a Prime95 torture test at the moment with 4 threads to put maximum stress on all 4 cores. All the fans are ramped up and it's hovering around 84C, but it's not getting any errors after running balls-out for about 20 minutes. I think I need to re-do the thermal paste and possibly crank down the cooler a few more turns to see if I can lower the CPU temp, but overall, I'm quite pleased with the results.

Side note, I re-used my old Thermalright HR-01 CPU cooler (with a 120mm fan), but to make it work on an LGA1155 board, I needed to pick up a new mounting kit called the "Venomous X BTK II" (who names these things?)...

What did you have prior? Contemplating if it's time to move on from my E6550 C2D.

I had an E5800...

...and before that, I had an E7300 on the same board...

Will prime95 allow you to set 8 threads? That's what you need to stress a 4 core CPU with hyperthreading... most multi-threaded windows software 'sees' 8 cores with these things.

Just broke my personal record for number of consecutive days without dying!

Mine doesn't have hyperthreading. It's an older chip from the time when only the i7s had hyperthreading.

The 2500k doesn't have hyperthreading.
