DICE 0.6 Released

APR 30

DICE 0.6 has been released! New in this version:
Support for two new games

Atari Anti-Aircraft
Exidy Attack

Color overlay simulation in Breakout

Improved simulator core algorithm that increases performance in several games
Improved sound in Gotcha
--

Another great update by Adam Bousley. Exidy Attack is another of the non-cpu videogames that DICE will be first emulator to show what the game looks like when playing the game.

As for myself going to arcades during 1970s, I don't recall seeing an Exidy Attack cab in person. I never knew what the game looked like.

The Exidy Attack flyer doesn't show what the game looks like either.

Exidy's version is a different game than Taito's version of Attack
http://flyers.arcade-museum.com/?page=thumbs&db=videodb&id=85

Taito's version looks like PSE's Bazooka imo.

As for Anti-Aircraft, I did play the game back then. It is a 3 button game that a player can select to raise the gun at an angle when trying to shoot at the airplane. See Atari flyer link to see how the cab control panel buttons are arranged.

Socodimex's cab version of Anti-Aircraft isn't as good looking as the N. American design, but I do like their bezel and control panel layout which are missing in the N. American cab model. It's too bad Atari didn't use a bezel and control panel layout similar to the Socodimex's cab version for the N. American cab models.

Thanks to the kind generosity of H.R. Kaufmann, president of Xidy,

http://www.mamedev.org/roms/
--

Does anyone know the contact for reaching H.R. Kaufmann? It would be ideal if permission is possible for roms/proms of non-cpu games to also be hosted on MAME site.

Thanks to Siftware's work, Exidy's Attack is first Exidy non-cpu videogame to be preserved.

Here's hoping proms from an Exidy Death Race pcb can be dumped even though a rom set that was dumped many years ago is floating around at this time. And also same for Exidy Destruction Derby and Alley Rally. Those pcbs need to be on the want list.

btw: roms/proms for Attack and Anti-Aircraft have been properly dumped by Siftware imo and should eventually be available.....especially ideal for users that need to keep their pcbs in working shape....besides for the few remaining old time gamers around here that played those 1970s era games or enjoy playing the real old games.

Remember to keep the roms/proms in the directory/folder called Roms when using DICE to play Stunt Cycle, Attack, and Anti-Aircraft. DICE looks for them in that folder name.

Again...thanks to both Adam Bousley for DICE and siftware (dumped roms from the pcbs).

As usaul you did an awesome job. Just curious will Tank ever be emulated in future releases?

Breakout works for me on the 64-bit version.

Got it working. I had to remap 'Player One Paddle'>Use Keyboard/Joystick>U,D,L,R from the default x-axis, y-axis of a controller to keys on my keyboard. Don't know why.

I also can't get my mouse to work even with the "Use Mouse" button checked

Weird, mouse worked fine here too. I would suggest you delete the config file(s) from older versions but I don't know where it is? I don't see one in my DICE folder.

>As usual you did an awesome job.

It's Adam that did the awesome update.

>Just curious will Tank ever be emulated in future releases?

Tank used a custom rom chip for storing data. Until recently, it wasn't known what type of chip it was. I don't believe it had been dumped by an emufriendly contributor, but Tank was dumped by a pcb repair technician many years ago. The Tank rom might be in emufriendly hands. I don't know status.

With Tank being a dual board hardware game, I am guessing it might be a while. DICE only handles single board games.

I am using the 32-bit version and my mouse does work okay with Breakout.

Re: DICE 0.6 released *TV Basketball answer edit* new [Re: Antny]
#308186 - 05/02/13 08:26 AM

>I try and launch TV Basketball, Rebound & Breakout and the emu (simu?) just closes.

With using 32-bit version, and when selecting TV Basketball to be the new game, it takes a bit longer to wait for the game to load. The new game dialog box stays on the bottom task bar much longer until TV Basketball finally loads to be visible. The remaining games load much faster.

Adam mentioned this to me and with my out-of-date computer, it makes sense:

"I'm wondering how much RAM your computer has? TV Basketball needs more memory than most of the other games, about 200-300 MB, and possibly more during init. Running out of memory could explain why it is taking so long to load..."

For anyone else using an old computer, TV Basketball will take longer to load....so it is not a bug issue.

As for Exidy Attack, to me....there appears to be some minor visible graphic issue with the score numbers when playing Attack. The Attack schematics show that the score numbers appears to not be any data stored on the proms. Ramtek does store character data and numbers (ie: text on screen) on Intersil 5610 proms. And I was guessing Exidy was doing something similar....not the case.

Anti-Aircraft looks to be okay imo.

Yep it is. I used to own the machine; not too long ago, in fact. The pictures on KLOV are from my machine.

Nice work! I'm happy to see that this game is now in DICE.

Excerpt from the Readme file that is included with the binary file. I am using 32-bit version, but it should also be in 64 bit version too.

DICE is a Discrete Integrated Circuit Emulator. It emulates computer systems
that lack any type of CPU, consisting only of discrete logic components.

1) Usage

By default, the DICE executable will launch in GUI mode, which allows
the user to configure the emulator and load a circuit. Additionaly, DICE
can be run from the command line by navigating to the directory where
DICE is installed and typing:

dice gamename

where "gamename" is the name of the game to be run:

pong
pongdoubles
rebound
gotcha
spacerace
stuntcycle
tvbasketball
breakout
antiaircraft
attack

This will launch DICE in fullscreen mode without the GUI. When launching from
the command line, press the Exit key to exit the emulator.

ROM files should be placed in a subfolder named "roms" in the directory where
the DICE executable is located. Please do not attempt to contact the DICE team
to request ROM files.

Kudos to siftware for dumping roms from Anti-Aircraft pcb years earlier and Adam getting the game up and running.

thanks. I feel so stupid right now.
I remember reading somewhere more parameters, other than game names. Were they removed from the latest DICE builds ? Or maybe they are not needed.

These were commandline options in a long ago version. I am guessing no longer used with newer versions of DICE since DICE had a major rewrite beginning with 0.3

Awesome to see Attack emulated! I passed up a PCB on Ebay a while back and have been kicking myself since as I've become quite an Exidy fan.

Roms that are still needed from other Exidy non-cpu videogames:

Exidy Alley Rally
http://flyers.arcade-museum.com/?page=thumbs&db=videodb&id=1807

Exidy Death Race
http://flyers.arcade-museum.com/?page=thumbs&db=videodb&id=1810

Death Race roms are around, but they were dumped many, many years ago. Uncertain if the rom data is useable or not. That's why Death Race should still be on some want list imo.

Demolition Derby is supposed to be licensed game of Exidy's Destruction Derby and
Demolition Derby was dumped some time ago. Not sure if the roms data would be exactly the same, but might be.

Football likely uses roms, but not certain if it is a cpu controlled game or not even though it is listed as such on Discrete Logistics. For the times I have scoured past online auctions, I don't recall seeing anything of the game other than the flyer.

www.meanhamstersoftware.com
owns the rights to Exidy games currently. Out of that we have Crossbow on the iphone.
I got permission from them to print a Star Fire T-shirt for myself a couple years back through Zazzle. A terrible waste of money on my part. Iron on print crap.

Pete Kauffman, owner of Xidy is on LinkedIn. if that is of any use.

Alley Rally and Death Race are available titles from my source.

I have been ignoring them up until now since they are not available in Mame.

Both have some nice Artwork Bezels which DICE can use?
As for dumping, I would have to know exactly what is needed that is not currently available.

Anything that is soldered in place would need some extra consideration since these boards are damn precious now.

The next warehouse run will likely be in September so if someone can fill me in on the needed goods, I'll see what I can do. PM me.

I've recently secured the bezels and artwork from Atari Skyraider and Destroyer, plus a version of Puckman that looks like little shop of horrors.
Some great stuff coming to the Mame ArtProject FTP site for you Photoshop experts.
Yes! we still need your help!

Any chance of getting stuff already supported in DICE? Breakout maybe? It would be nice to see artwork support for DICE. Death Race would be cool also.
