MESS on steroids...

A lot of job has been done, in the past month, to improve the experience of systems like MegaDrive, Game Boy, SNES & NES in MESS , by e.g. simplifying the usage of Virtua Racing for MD or of Super Mario Kart for SNES, or by adding support for Nintendo Competition carts for NES & SNES, etc.
However, it is often not so clear from the svn logs or the whatsnew what the changes are about... so that it might be of use to go through some snaps
main article: http://mamedev.emulab.it/etabeta/?p=326
and some system specific entries

well, Kale has been working on Saturn and improving its functionalities for quite some time, as he's shown on his blog. if you missed that, and the multiple mentions of saturn and stv in the MAME/MESS whatsnew, then you should give a try to the driver in the latest MESS version with QMC2 as frontend!
As the link explains, my very limited contribution dealt with making Backup RAM cart (used to save progresses in games, like the PSX Memory cards) to work in current code without conflicting with the code needed by the expansion RAM cart.

you're free to use whatever emulator you want. we're not in a dictatorship.
still I feel more comfortable with MESS, because it works on my macbook, it has a powerful debugger, it has great cheats, it has avi export, it has GLSL filters (and HLSL if you are on Windows) and I can configure just once the commands and controls and use them with ease in a hundreds of different computers and consoles...

Yeah! And.. wait, what? Did I miss a commit or something? HLSL already rocks thanks to MG's stellar work; it would be so sweet to have GLSL for Linux too..

Yes i leave you alone, when you stop being a fool here. It's my opinion, not yours. So go play MESS and be quiet please.

I haven't used MESS in at least 10 years but with all this recent progress I think I'm going to have to give it a fresh look.

Uh, what? B2k24 regularly helps the MAME community by putting together sets, compiling u releases, and generally being very helpful. Conversely, you make asinine comments and act like an asshat. So what is it that makes him the fool and not you?

GLSL filters for Linux have been in MAME/MESS since long before the HLSL ones. They have not so many options as the HLSL (and you need to manually edit the filters rather than using a slider control), but they do a quite terrific job if you use e.g. cgwg CRT filter
instructions here
http://forums.bannister.org/ubbthreads.php?ubb=showflat&Number=76578#Post76578
and somewhere after that post there should still be an active link to the CRT shader by cgwg
Also, Arbee promised that eventually all HLSL goodness will come to Unix/OSX, but we have to wait some more...

SDLMAME had GLSL shader filters almost on day 1 (MAME 0.111 was the first full release with them, if my records are correct). It's a bit harder to set up than HLSL, but it's also more flexible.

It's true. In latest SVN you can finish both the PSX and Saturn versions of Symphony of the Night in MESS. And a lot of other games too ;-)

Yeah what kept a lot of people from using MESS (myself included) was the fact that your more popular emulators still had issues. This build seems to pretty much fix the major issues with SNES, NES, Genesis and Saturn... so yeah all the big ones are working... huge improvement.

Thanks, guys. I'm totally floored that I missed all this, but I'm not completely saying goodbye to Windows until later this year, so I haven't had a chance to test the waters yet. Very nice!
