DU Update: PGM

We started working with Haze again on reading out PGM protection. The China cart of Dodonpachi II only had a tiny difference in the readout vs. what we already did to change the region so Haze was able to do the same for all regions. So there are 1 million new versions added. Next up is Puzzli 2, promising results so far but some more hardware has to be ordered.

I wonder if this will affect the unplayable state of The Killing Blade Plus so that it can be playable in a near future...
I'm very curious about that game, since I enjoy the regular edition very very much...

What we're doing is getting the protection code on a game by game basis with custom trojans. Sometimes it doesn't even affect clones of the game we crack. We just got lucky with Bee Storm. So no it doesn't help Killing Blade Plus. I don't even think we have that cart.

Haze says the first 512 bytes of its protection are not readable with our known methods so you are looking at either decap luck or a trojan breakthrough or more likely nothing.

Is there any evidence all these clones really exist? -nt-

The only clones I've ever seen that aren't in mame are 3 Taito games from the 90s.

I mean, he added all the different regions, but how can you be sure they all were released and exist? Or you can add anything with a hacked region as a new game/clone to MAME and whether it was officially released is not mandatory?

The problem with adding faked regions of games is when it's unclear how they should be. The prime examples are some Taito games where you could change the region with a byte swap, and we have seen some of them (real boards) just have this byte difference but then also seen other Taito games where between regions they swapped this byte and plus made other differences, so they have to all be read out to see what they did. But when we can be reasonably sure they didn't do any other changes on other regions they can be faked. Like CPS3 carts, a lot of them could be faked, just they haven't been done yet. As far as wanting to have proof that they sold a board vs. just made the code to have the option to produce them, I really don't care either way but I'd never buy a game just to prove it existed, and I wouldn't want to keep versions out of mame that weren't sold, like some Atari clones we got from when one of their HQ closed, some of those have no proof of being sold, they may have never left the HQ but we still put them in mame. If we had Mrs. Gorf it would go in mame etc.
