1) classicshell. Install it. Since day 1, you've been able to boot directly to the desktop, WITH THE FREAKING START BUTTON. I've said it many times and it's getting old.
2) I wouldn't put it past M$ to charge for the update. Upgrading from Windows 3.0 to 3.1 had a price tag, didn't it? In recent times, the only free upgrade model Microsoft has had, was in the form of Service packs. XP SP1, SP2, SP3 (for example). An actual version change... I don't ever recall that being free from them.

Microsoft very much wishes to get into the yearly $29 upgrade business like OS X. It has the side benefit of preventing the engineers from going on 4 year unshippable fantasias like the original Cairo or Longhorn. And as long as it's at that price I don't mind so much.
