I've used TurboTax for the past 3 or 4 years (maybe longer). I could swear I didn't have to pay to file my Federal taxes. State Taxes? Yes. But I could always stop with TurboTax (TT for short), then just find a free fillable form from the irs.gov website.
This time I couldn't see any way to NOT have to pay to file my Federal taxes (regardless of them claiming it was "free" to file). But thankfully there are free fillable forms for Federal taxes. It was a bit of a headache figuring out what to put where... But when the numbers I got matched what TT gave me - I went with those and e-filed that way (for Federal). Then I did the same for my State taxes... Figuring what the numbers/amounts should be. I'll still need to mail it in.
So, even though I thought I'd just straight up quit using TT (since they can't be up-front and honest about their charges) -I figure next year I can just use them to FIGURE what my taxes should be, then use the free fillable forms.
Also, just like I tell myself every other year, don't start so freaking late.
Unless they (TT) figure they'll make their customers/users pay up-front to start. That would be rather diabolical.

Federal Free Edition? I had no issues, though I was asked repeatedly to upgrade, which easily doubled the amount of time it should have taken to get my taxes done.

Well, I had finished my Federal (it showed I was getting a refund), then it was time to do (or file?) my State taxes (which showed I owed), that's when it came to a screen with 3 steps (2 of them were grayed out), and saying I'd have to select a method of payment... I didn't go all the way through with it and that might be why I didn't see a way to avoid paying anything. :-/

I pay someone to do my taxes. I think the value of having a CPA's signature on the returns is well worth the price. I think it drops the possibility of an audit close to zero. Plus they find deductions that I would not have known about.
