It's true, although it's not anything new. There were tons of movies back in the day that were remakes, but most people never knew it. Before home video really took off, unless you were a real film buff, the only way you'd see a 20-30 year old movie was if the local UHF station happened to play it. Unless the movie was a deliberately conspicuous remake, like King Kong with Jessica Lange, they tended to fly under the radar.
