Street Fighter 2 issue with Joystick, MAME .148
#307021 - 04/08/13 06:58 PM

I'm using a PS3 Fighting Stick Mini 3 on my PC. It works great for SFIV.

But in MAME on SF2, it's nearly impossible to pull off Hadouken or Dragon Punch (any move involving diagonal). When I go into the controller options through the MAME menus, I can only map the four primary directions, not the diagonals ... could that have anything to do with it? I thought that was odd, considering SF2 used 8 way joysticks but in the MAME settings there are only 4 ways. Is there something special I need to do to set up 8 way joystick working properly?

I'm using the latest .148 MAME.

It's called an 8 way joystick but there are only 4 microswitches used. Diagonals are made when 2 of them are triggered together. I don't know what is wrong with it if it's working in SF4. If you have steadykey enabled that might do it but that is off by default.

SFIV is both more generous with timings, and the sequences to pull off a dragon punch, half-circles IIRC than SF2 was.

I've found this video to be helpful.

It works well for playing fighting games in MAME, and also for shmups (Galaga, Gradius, etc).

If you also intend to play any SNK fighters (KOF98 etc), it's essential because those games are much, much pickier with joystick inputs.

It's hard to believe this is catching on, if it is. It feels about as awkward as picking up a guitar the first time and trying to get my left hand fingers in the right place for chords. I can see it working for 1 superfreak in Japan, that's about it.

All it takes is a little practice.

Also, I never said it would work for everyone. I simply said I found it helpful.
