I can't get MAME to play my old roms! WHY?!

I'm just getting back into mame after a long break.
My roms are from 2004. They all worked then.
But I just downloaded the newest version of mame today and now everytime I start a rom I get the following message..."The selected game is missing one or more required ROM or chd images."
What gives?

The mame rom sets change over time as bad dumps get replaced, parent/clone relationships change, rom names get corrected per rom stickers and board placement, pals get added that hardly anyone can dump, and other reasons. You can either use a mame from 2004 or use clrmame on them and update them. Those are your only options.

It's because as MAME has changed and progressed throughout the years, so do the roms and those sets.
Learn how to use ClrMAME and update your sets so you can enjoy the latest version of MAME and all of the bugfixes/progress/features it can offer

The Mamedevs are constantly improving the emulation of most arcade games, so their respective roms will also change to reflect those improvements.
You must update your roms to the most current version of mame so that you will be able to play them.
