Newer LGA1155 CPUs
#305154 - 03/02/13 01:12 AM

Recently I upgraded/still in the process of upgrading to an LGA1155 motherboard and bought a cheap £30 Pentium G645 2.9GHz and I have to say I'm really impressed at how much of a difference it makes to MAME. Don't get me wrong, I knew there'd be some difference, but heck, some games are now almost 100% compared to my C2D setup before, and the funny thing is that I want to get an i5 in future so I can't wait to see the difference that makes lol.

I was playing Time crisis 2 earlier (and getting around 50%) and having a lot of fun despite not being full speed and the camera having a little issue with POV, and great to play until the Donkey Kong section lol. Ahwell, just wanted to ramble and say I'm loving my new setup.

Good to hear! I'm still rocking the C2D, but have been itching to upgrade. Haven't decided yet on the path I want to take... may wait until later this year to see what Haswell can do.

Are you running a 64-bit OS and 64-bit MAME? That makes a major difference.

Agreed. 64bit makes a big difference with most drivers. A shelled OS helps too. I run xp64 shelled to hyperspin.

I don't recall trying TC2 but I can tell you none of the ridge racers drop a frame on my i5 2500k @ 4.3ghz (stock air).

Gradius 4 still skips but only a bit. About 95%. Same with GTI Club. Sandy Bridge was a huge step up from C2D, especially the unlocked CPUs. Think we will be waiting a bit longer than Haswell for the next real speed bump though.

It was 64-bit on both machines, but the fact the pentium is out performing my old PC when all i did was update the motherboard, CPU and GPU and still want further upgrades

The Intel engineer who did the recent Reddit "Ask Me Anything" said that overclockers will *really* super-enjoy Haswell, but he wasn't allowed to say why. I guess we'll find out in another month or two

I feel like I'm stuck in the past and will never keep up with technologies pace. Don't they say the best thing to do when entering is get the current gen, otherwise you'll always be behind?

Yeah, I'm quite curious. Ivy Bridge was a somewhat more difficult OC than Sandy (which is why I kept my 2600K as-is and just gave it more RAM), so any advance on that front is always amusing.

It's kind of too bad AMD doesn't present enough of a threat to force them to ship higher-binned chips as-is; the last 3 generations of Intel all have been able to run well over 4 GHz without substantial drama.
