Refresh rate in Street Fighter II
#304546 - 02/19/13 02:05 AM

The refresh rate for Street Fighter II is set to 59.629403 Hz. Prior to MAME 0.127, the refresh rate was set to 60.0 Hz.
My questions are: Why was this changed? (Or, if 59.629403 Hz is the correct value, why was it ever set to 60 Hz?)
And why does Wikipedia still list it at 60 Hz? Yes, I know, anybody can edit Wikipedia. So, is there any other source (that has nothing to do with MAME or with emulation) where the value 59.629403 Hz is mentioned?

I don't have any idea about how the development of MAME and the reverse engineering works, so my questions are not supposed to be criticising anybody. I'd just like to know about the above things because I'm curious about what's up with the different refresh rates. It would be great if you could explain it to me.

I haven't looked it up for this game but if the frequency hasn't been measured it gets estimated. So it looked like it was estimated and then measured.

Huh? I don't understand. You said it doesn't get measured, but estimated. And then, after being estimated, it gets measured?

Yes indeed.

Estimated when the driver was first written, then later someone was able to get a frequency counter in there and measure it exactly.

I think now I got it. So, the 60 Hz was the estimated value and the 59.629403 Hz was the one that was actually reliably measured, right?

of course yes.
the opposite would have made no sense. think about it...

earlier:
no instruments -> estimations -> MAME used 60Hz

later:
oscilloscope -> accurate measurement -> MAME changed to 59.whatever Hz

why would have been changed in MAME otherwise?

Sure, it's logical. I just wanted to be totally sure and find out how this happened in the first place.

MAME is an iterative process.
