Steve Sansweet was head of Lucasfilm's Fan Relations for many years, and recently retired. However, the bulk of his collection was complete before his employment: in fact, it helped get him the job.
I once had the honor of emailing him: During his tenure as head of Lucasfilm's Fan Relations, I had the bright idea to start up a project to do a third-party open-source freeware recreation of the Star Wars holochess game "Dejarik" (depicted in Episode IV: A New Hope) since no commercial game had yet done it - and I'm pretty sure no game has a decent recreation of it still. Anyhow, to do that, I needed character models, and decent HD photos of what was used in the movie as playing pieces. Guess who collected the playing pieces. (EDIT: Actually there's a few of them in image 7 of the image gallery: http://www.techrepublic.com/photos/darth...ner#photopaging) ... so, following an email to his personal email account (not his lucasfilm.com account) outlining my request and explaining my intentions, I received an email from some lawyer explaining that their next move would be a cease-and-desist should I continue my "research" to that end.
We've since met in passing at some convention. (New York Comic Con 2009, IIRC)

You seem surprisingly unbitter, considering what a shitty response you got. It seems like a personal "hey I can't help you and you should probably drop that project" response would have been just as effective.

Well, it's like 14 years ago at this point... and somewhere along the line it dawned on me how very few skills I had to create an open-source game engine. (These days, I gather some of this work can easily be collected together from various projects.) At best, I could maybe cheerlead such a project, find the necessary content to inspire the project, and draw people with the right skills together. And it was also a reality check that there were larger IP concerns involved. I dunno, as far as I'm concerned if you treat their intellectual property "with respect" and do not profit at all, I don't see what the big deal would have been. Maybe these days would be different, since the culture of sampling/remixing/deriving has grown in popularity. Oh well.
