I think it's a serious cry for help.
Another dude's shirt read "Boys will be boys"... yeah, unless he is wearing a skirt... like he was...

I didn't know these were the rejected wardrobe ideas from The Fifth Element.

Since it wasn't brought up here...and often isn't brought up when people discuss these kinds of weird "fashion" selections....it's supposed to be art. Plain and simple.
Just as some paint on a canvas, or draw on a piece of paper, or compose something on the piano...these weird, often impractical fashion pieces are using the body as art.
Keep in mind, art isn't always supposed to be pleasing to the eye or the senses. Art is supposed to evoke an emotion. Sometimes the emotion the artist is trying to get the observer to feel is shock, disgust, anger just as it is with paintings, music, poetry, etc.
In the world of fashion, sometimes more practical or useful ideas are spawned from these weird or quirky pieces, again just as with painting, drawing, or music. How many times have you seen sketches of concept cars that are sooo over the top, or impractically designed? the designs would never work in the real world, but often ideas from those concepts are put into real life production cars?

I see where you're coming from, but that doesn't change the fact that some of these are just plain silly. You can't put a guy in giant, oversized mittens and evoke any emotion other than amusement. The "please kill me" shirt does suggest that the designer knows this, at least to some degree. What really makes it for me is the utterly dejected looks on the models' faces, but again they may be doing that intentionally. I assume a model who is a real professional could make it down the runway in just about anything with a straight face if they're being paid to do so.
I also get what you're saying about elements of the wild designs making it into more mainstream clothes, but I would suggest that the concepts here, overtly feminine styles for men, are not remotely ready for the mainstream yet.

Art is subjective. Amadeus's work wasn't really appreciated by his peers and his music at the time was controversial and not really understood.
What is "silly" to you is seen as legitimate art in certain circles. Many of these clothing designers are seen as "avant garde artists" much in the same way that Pablo Picasso, Buckminster Fuller (known for the geodesic dome), Coltrane, or I guess more modern...Banksy are/were in their respective artistic circles.
Now...is this fashion art something I particularly enjoy? Nope...but then again the art isn't FOR ME...it's aimed at those who already have a foundation in fashion to look at and critique as art.

I'm not wearing those. If they quit making guys clothes then I rather go outside nude with a sign saying I'm not wearing what you have on.
