It's not a ROM, it's a 450-gate CPLD. Anyway, Google Translate thinks "東方不敗" means "swordsman" in Chinese, although I don't know how accurate that is (yes, Google thinks "東方" means "Orient" and "不敗" means unbeaten).
edit: apparently it's the traditional Chinese for Dongfang Bubai's name. According to Wikipedia, "his name has become synonymous with homosexuality and sexual perversion in Chinese popular culture." Interesting - a perverted chip.

Turns out to be dirt simple protection.
The game expects to read #$0200 from $180000 and #$0210 from $1f7040.
Other than that, it looks like it runs on standard sf2ce hardware just fine. ^^
I need to play through it a bit to ensure that it doesn't touch the protection anywhere else. btw, any ideas on a set name?

I think by perverted, they mean perverting its original code, just as Dongfang Bubai is sexually perverted. Interesting inside joke on the bootlegger's part.

I assume that there is more to the CPLD than that & earlier reads cause it to trigger those results. Otherwise there would be no problem with just dumping it as an eprom and burning it.

It only ever reads those two addresses. Smittdog, fancy trying to read it as an eprom? I could probably knock out an algo for whatever it returns, as long as the results are constant.

It won't read out as what is supposed to go there (27C4096). I will not try to solder 20 wires to it to make fake pins. I've tried that before on a chip losing much fewer legs and I can't do it. The wires don't stick well enough to get a read, not when the break is this far down, even if you try sanding the chip to get more metal showing. If you have some other eprom type I can read it out as in its current form I can try that, and just bypass the insertion complaints. But it's not going to work either way.

It would be possible to get any SF2 set to run on any SF2 hardware so long as you hacked up the roms to compensate for protection and hardware changes. As for straight dropping the roms sans the Altera chip, that won't even work on official hardware. You would have to hack the program to integrate what the Altera chip does. Like when we made the MK Kombo sets hacked to inklude what the gal was doing so you don't need the daughter kard for a konversion.

Do you know any good place to have a review of special moves/features of almost all hacks and bootlegs of the old era sf2? There are a large number of versions.

And, maybe is a nerd question, but why the mamedevs don't like to include the new dumped hacks, and official mame is full of sf2ce hacks as koryu, m2,m3,.....m1000?¿

It's not that MAME doesn't want these, it is just not as high on the immediate priority list for most developers. I myself tried to add one of the last 3.. "mstreet-6" or whatever it was and I failed to add it. It takes more than normal replace this with that skills to add some clones either due to new rom configs or added data. I gave it the 'college try'. External contributions are welcome from anyone who can add these sets, of course.

Try to contact Treble Winner (FBA main dev) as those sf2 hacks are emulated in FBA (with some others sf2 bootlegs dumps by Bonky0013)
