MAME to TV
#302078 - 01/07/13 07:04 AM

Hi guys, new here, need to ask a question. Trying to view main on my 32" HDTV, just bought a new laptop with a pair of HDMI ports...thought it would be as simple as connecting an HDMI cable from laptop to TV to have MAME viewable, I was wrong. Can someone please give me a tutorial or suggest perhaps a link to help troubleshoot this situation. Thank you!

Can you see your desktop on the tv? You have to switch the source to the HDMI you have it hooked up to.

Yeah I see my desktop on the TV, it's when I load MAME that I run into the proverbial black screen on the boob tube.

The easiest way is to set the TV as the primary display in Windows or in your video driver control panel.

There is also a way to configure MAME to run on a secondary display but I don't know the syntax for that, see the docs or the FAQ.

screen goes black when you launch a game?
might be trying to switch to low-res, which your tv surely does not support.
try the -noswitchres command line switch.

I'll try the suggestions on display, I know MAME runs low-res, I figure that might complicate things on an HD display. Mind use I'm running Win 8, I also considered as an alternative a VGA to S-Video cable...I do have a LCD non-hd television...perhaps that could work?

If your desktop shows on the HDMI display, obviously the cable and your TV are fine, right?
MAME does not "run low-res", it runs at your current resolution by default. So unless you have changed that yourself, then resolution is not the problem either.

By default, MAME always runs on your primary display, which is your laptop screen. That's why you don't see anything on the external display. It's like I said, you need to either make your HDMI TV the primary display, or find out how to configure MAME to run on the secondary display. MAME does not know that you have a secondary display hooked up until you tell it.

Actually there is a third "solution" which is to run MAME in a window and then dragging it onto the secondary display.

What it does it switch over to your 2nd screen. Just switch to \\.\DISPLAY1 if it doesn't.

I got it to work, I tinkered with the switchres option in config menu, it did the job.
