Harddrive size for Mame
#301508 - 12/28/12 04:58 PM

Would a 500gb harddrive be large enough to cater for mame?

Currently at 300gb i'm wondeing how big it will grow (roughly) in the next 5 years, only i'm buying a new system and i want to get the right spec.

Cheers.

Close to 30gb just for the merge ROM's sets. All in 7z.

I don't know about the CHD's. So forget about having all of these because there will be some that is mark as not working on MAME.

Artworks is about 1.59gb. All in 7z.

Samples is about under 200mb. All in 7z.

So yea MAME sets will grow non stop until arcade no longer have machines anymore. This is why I have 2 of the 2tb hard drives. Don't forget about the MESS sets too.

MESS probably will live longer than MAME. Computers, home gaming machines and others.

Ya know, ya don't have to download everything on the internets. And if you do, you can add another drive later.

If you notice the size of the sets as things have advanced(and will continue to do so), you may see a pattern appear. Extrapolate that and then add some.

Oh yea, don't forget to get a back-up for that too.

5 years is a long time, a full set could easily grow larger than 500gb by then. Whether it will include any games that are worth downloading is another matter.

Nobody can say for sure what size it will be because predicting the future is hard. There are plenty of laser discs and pc hard drives that need to be dumped.

Aren't 1tb drives pretty standard now?

You can get a decent 1TB drive for $50-60 these days, if you know where to look (i.e. Newegg). Personally, I wouldn't even bother messing around with anything smaller for MAME or pretty much any other purpose.

And that's not even including any potential new additions of Laserdisc games.

lol Well funny you should say that but for an extra £20 i got upgraded from a 500GB HDD to a 2TB HDD, so a no brainer really. I've also gone with a 250GB SSD for my main drive. Thanks for all the replys. This can be locked now, i have my new system and i'm future proofed.
