Second build - monitor advice
#300604 - 12/14/12 01:23 PM

Hi,

I built a mame cab a few years ago using an original elctrohome VGA arcade monitor. I love it - side by side to my orignal cabs (Donkey Kong, Glaxian and Pacman) the games look identical.

I am going to build a second cab now housed inside a Return of the Jedi. I'm in the minority cos I actually really like Return of Jedi!

Games will be limited to those I can play with the Yolk - but in addition to ROTJ I will be able to play vector games such Star Wars, Empire Strikes Back.

And there is where I am struggling... what monitor do I go for? For the Jedi to look authentic I figured that I will need a VGA. However I suspect the vector games will look a lot better on a SVGA screen. Can anyone advise me what an Arcade SVGA picture looks like? I occasionally hook up Mame to my PC Monitor - this a Sony SVGA. Vector games look pretty good on this monitor but raster games (Donkey Kong etc) look awful - the screen is just too good and the graphics just don't look authentic. I appreciate that there are software solutions out there to try and recreate the look of a VGA but I've never rated the results.

Can someone tell me what raster games look like on an arcade monitor that supports both VGA and SVGA e.g. the old Wells-Gardner D9200 Arcade Monitor. Will they look like they do on my SVGA PC monitor? If this is the case I'll prob stick with the VGA so ROTJ looks authentic and take a hit that the vector games may be lacking somewhat.

Hope that makes sense - thanks in advance...

Jim

Vector games will definitely look better on SVGA - there's nothing worse than jaggy vectors As far as raster games, have you tried the HLSL feature, assuming you have a video card that can handle it? People have gotten some quite authentic-looking settings out of it on even LCD monitors.

...have you tried the HLSL feature...?

Particularly in light of the new vector HLSL work.....
