Video WIP: ParaParaParadise

Got this nailed down just in time for u3 with some help from hap. Setup's a bit annoying so I'm not marking it as fully working yet but once nvram's written out it only happens once.
Yes there is almost 15 seconds of blank screen at the start, that's just how the game boots
http://rbelmont.mameworld.info/?p=775
The video shows First Mix Plus; PPP 1.1 and ParaParaDancing are also playable. The original 1.0 PPP has an incomplete dump which we hope to get fixed.

I once played this in a real arcade.
Yeah, a thirty year old dude with graying hair dancing like a tiny Japanese woman wasn't awkward to look at, no sir.
Good work, and I'm pretty happy to see it in such a playable state.

Will Keyboardmania fit into this driver or has it not been dumped yet?

KBM 2nd and 3rd Mix used to work at least. Both games are missing keyboard sounds though (some weird Yamaha MIDI tone generator that is hard to dump/emulate).

I get "E991 WHEEL ERROR" when I try, but it looks good up until that point.
ETA: Scratch that, Keyboard Mania 2nd and 3rd Mix work with the latest code if you initialize the factory settings and sound flash. Additionally, on 2nd Mix you have to hold down the right arrow key while it's testing the wheel or that fails

As a longtime Bemani fan I'm glad to see another of the systems fall into place. While the documentation and preservation is awesome, I'm wondering, will the controls on this be something that can be easily simulated? Not as far as "will someone create/adapte some kind of external sensor interface", but just as far as how it works, I'm curious how complicated (or simple) the actual sensor inputs are and how well they will fit into MAME's input system since I know there have been cases in the past where things don't really "fit" quite right when it comes to a weird analog input device.

That one isn't analog at all - it's just simple IR interrupt sensors like the Sega Activator, except they work, they don't pick up interference, and they're used in a game suited to that form of input. They just look like buttons to the system.

Yup. "like the Sega Activator, except they work" is a perfect description

Ah, ok. I assumed they had some sort of height calculation to them (like the maracas in Samba de Amigo) since I thought there was a high/low aspect to the moves and was trying to figure out how the sensors did that, but then again it's been 10 years since I played PPP. I saw a few when I was in Japan a couple years ago but resisted the urge, for various reasons. Mostly related to nearby gals and a snarky friend. On/off switches are simple enough, lol. Well, in the grand scheme.

Man, next you guys will be jumping all over the U-Force. Dissin all over the unfortunately conceived infrared technology clumsily shoehorned into console gaming.
Which is fair, it was also pretty bad. I think I actually have one in a box somewhere, though. heh.

So is the report about the "hard to emulate" tone generator still accurate? And what Yamaha chip is it anyway?

IIRC all the roms are surface-mounted and there's some H8-series MCU with possible internal program. The sound chip is some Yamaha custom.
Also, I'm ~95% sure the board is just this thing with its case ripped out: http://usa.yamaha.com/products/music-production/tone-generators/mu100/?mode=model Which would make an interesting emulation target on its on right

Guru just dumped me the H8 program ROM from the thing and it appears to be complete
(ETA: Even has what looks like all the strings for the menu system on the LCD, so this could be a two-for ;-)

Some good music there that is being played during the "attract mode" sequence.
As for getting the first Drum Mania working, is the only issue the missing audio CD? Or is there more work needing to be done first within the psx hardware controller files?
Camelot's arcade just isn't what it used to be compared to 1980s or even just a few years ago (photo was from soCali MAME meet 2006) when they still had a fair number of Konami games there including Drum Mania.

So when will MAME start accepting MIDI input?

Nice if the hardware is emulatable. Although I do question the "custom Yamaha chip" that might be tricky to emulate

MIDI input could also be useful for MESS if they ever emulate the Miracle Piano Teaching System hardware (which existed for both PC and NES I believe)

Lots of MESS targets have MIDI I/O, e.g. Atari home computers and SoundBlaster cards. It would be cool if these showed up as MIDI ports in whatever your host system's native MIDI system is.

We have a marked-working driver for 2 Alesis drum machines and several synthesizer drivers in varying states of working too. I'm entertained that people know so little about MESS to assume that the Miracle Piano would be the first such target

It's a ROMpler. Aside from the effects engine it's unlikely to be much we haven't seen before.

Off the top of my head: - alesis.c (marked GAME_NOT_WORKING contrary to what I said, although I'm not sure why since it seems to be complete) - esq1.c (needs analog filter emulation) - esq5505.c (these were the basis for the Taito Ensoniq arcade sound boards; most but not all are missing sample ROM dumps and I do have a lead on some dumps) - mirage.c (starts to load the OS off floppy and pukes)
Plus Phil B. has a driver for the Fairlight CMI that he hasn't submitted yet on account of not understanding how the actual sound generation works, IIRC.
I have a plan to integrate the PortMIDI library so we can do MIDI I/O on the Big 3 OSes. Just haven't gotten around to it yet.

Ooooh... MESS-VST, anyone? Classic synths, emulated in MESS, directly in my DAW would be *insane*.

The license for the VST SDK is annoying, but yes, I'd love to punch a few DAW tracks through emulated synths in MESS

That would be awesome to use Midi input, cause then you could use it for KBM aswell as beatmania which I always had trouble playing, altough coincidently enough playing it on the PS1 with the actual keyboard/deck controller, I found it imposible to play, but I wasnt sure if I sucked or the TV was lagging

For standard def you can easily ensure no lag by using a CRT TV, of course

An old one of course, 3D filtering adds lag. No trinitron for you.
