Future Pinball has come a long ways. :)
#299277 - 11/18/12 08:37 AM

I just started getting back into the emulated/simulated pinball scene (seem to go in 4 year bursts, laugh) and saw that Future Pinball table-making has really progressed since 2009. There are folks doing elaborate 3D modeling now to add the toys to recent games and they have gotten *really* good at ROM simulation (future pinball doesn't support ROMs). At any rate, on modern machines you can now max out the settings w/out too much trouble for 6x anti-aliased, trilinear filtered goodness.

Thankfully all the tables are available for easy download here if you want to catch up:
http://www.pinsimdb.org/

The usual suspects have gotten a lot of love, Twilight Zone, Addams Family, Star Trek TNG, T2, Indiana Jones, etc.

Anyhow I was a big proponent when FP hit the scene back in the mid-aughts and a new kid on the block Pinball Arcade piqued my curiosity and re-examination of the scene.

I also initially checked out VP and VPMame which has continued development and supports integration w/ ROM tables of course but I always liked FP's graphics and setup somewhat more. Anyhow, just a heads up for folks that don't frequent that side of things.

Yes, this simulator is very cool.
Sadly, it hasn't been updated since 2010

I prefer VP9 over FP running VP 9.x Cabinet Tables (FULL SCREEN)on a vertical display.

If you can dedicate a 3 screen setup then it's even sweeter

Yes 2 lcd displays and a DMD is very sweet. One day I would like to build one or even just buy the kit.

If I ever get the 3k cash then I will buy me one. =)

The mini cab is very tempting because it folds down and doesn't take up so much room.

It looks really nice but the Visual Pinball physics & authenticity is still on another level.

Great job with the conversions though. Lots of talented guys working on them.

FP is really cool, I used it a lot a while back, and I loaded it up again after seeing your post, but it really needs an update. It took me about 30 minutes of scratching my head before I figured out that you have to launch it as an administrator to get a table to actually run properly and accept input. I assume they're either storing things in the wrong place in the registry, or simply not setting the right permissions when trying to read a key. I mean, registry key access rights have only been around since Vista was released in 2007.

Eh? Nah, more like WinNT3/4:

True, but mainstream consumer apps didn't really have to care about them until Vista came out. I remember a fairly mad scramble at my job to fix all of our UAC issues and get a Vista-compliant release out the door in time for the launch.

Been immersing myself in it for the last few days trying to collect 4 years worth of tables; fwiw it appears the physics have been tweaked sufficiently that now it is at least on par w/ VP. The later 'Ultra' edition tables by author Slamti1t are a good example of this.

You're right of course about ROM interaction, but imo it's worth the slight knock for the superior presentation.

I'm running it on Win8 x64 Pro in a directory outside of the program files (c:\games\future pinball\)and don't have to run as admin nor run w/ a compatibility setting.

I do find it interesting that on some of the most complex tables I run out of VRAM w/ a 1GB ATI 6870 with all settings maxxed and I use trilinear filtering.. it leaves the playfield blank and blank on some other textures. Dropping down to bilinear works. Wonder if a 2GB card would suffice or if I would have to go to 3GB.

Unfortunately, Slamti1t modded others work without their permission, uploaded some WIP on youtube saying if he got 100K views he would release it, which followed with him rage quitting and leaving altogether never releasing the table.

I'm still grabbing all the tables, I'll check into the politics later. Which table were you talking about w/ the YouTube? Based on the comments in their entries on PinSimDB it looked like he was credting and getting collaboration. *shrug*
