Mame on windows 8 touchscreen tablet
#299173 - 11/17/12 10:26 AM

I just bought a new windows 8 tablet, the acer iconia W700 with core i5.
In old versions of mame like v0.105u4 the touchscreen work and i can map and control the games but in new versions( v0.147u2 ) the touch screen don't work.
Mame v0105.u4 is the last version that i have found that work with touch screen.
Is there any solution?

Thanks.

Plug in an Xbox 360 pad? It'll be a much more satisfying experience than trying to play Pac-Man with touch controls

I'd like to play handheld style.

Why on older versions of mame the touchscreen work and not in the current versions ? What has changed ?

Thanks.

Probably gotten taken out. Windows 8 wasn't even in Dev yet. MAME gotten cleaning up ever since then. That support might get put back. Just don't hold your breath.

What do you mean by "work"? There has never been touchscreen code in the windows versions of MAME. Some games are controllable by mouse/lightgun, if you enable it. The touchscreen might be able to be used as a mouse or lightgun, but I don't believe we've ever had joystick games work with it.

Yes, in version 0.105u4 you can map all the games with the touchscreen like a keyboard.

You'll need to provide a screenshot of what you mean, because that doesn't sound like any functionality ever included in the MAME source code.

I made a video

http://youtu.be/hzTBP7_s3wM

This is Mame32 plus v0.105u4.
I also tried in mame32 v0.119 and touchscreen didn't work.
And in current versions don't work.
It's like if in current versions mame capture the mouse and in version v0.105u4 not.

In ALL the other emulators ( model 2, pcsx2, model 3, desmume, NullDC, etc...) touchscreen work though in Dolphin and Demul need a mouse plugged in to work.

Ahh, on-screen keyboard. Yeah, that won't work for the same reason Joy2Key and the like don't work. MAME uses advanced Windows functionality ("XInput") in order to properly support multiple keyboards/mice/lightguns and a lot of software of that nature isn't programmed properly to work properly in that situation (they're supposed to use a driver and appear as a real input device; most of them cheat instead).

An option to make it work in current Mame would be amazing.
In all the others current emulators touchscreen work.

Is that some kind of third-party OSK? I scored a Win8 Ultrabook from work last week and the built-in OSK doesn't look like that.

Personally, I'm not much of a fan of on-screen keyboards. It's OK when you're in tablet mode for punching in a URL or a quick message board comment, but if I need to do any serious typing I pull out the real keyboard. The Win8 keyboard is better than, say, the iPhone simply because the "keys" are bigger, but the lack of tactile feedback is still disconcerting. For gaming, it's a complete non-starter for me.

Wouldn't force direct input in Mame source work?

Yeah, I'd be curious if the Win8 default OSK actually works with MAME. (I would *assume* Microsoft would implement that in an Xinput-compatible way given they're trying to push all games in that direction).

That make sense now. MAME32 Plus have that support.

Try mame32 plus v0.119
It's probably one of the things that makes it "plus"

Perhaps have a look at GameEX and hopefully you can use the latest version of MAME and get the touchscreen support that you are looking for.

Tom Speirs or other members could possibly help you out with what you're trying to accomplish.

I finally found a solution, Cabmame.
In Cabmame you can enable direct input and work in touchcreen.
The last version is Cabmame v0.146, it's not up to date but almost.
