(like it used to appear in CRT monitors). my mame.ini setting "aspect" is set to "auto" Thanks for your input. The pixel aspect ratio is the ratio of the resolution the game's running at, without taking into consideration what the ratio of the intended monitor is (usually 4:3 for MAME). It has a similar effect to -nokeepaspect and is intended for the same general situation: debugging a driver with extremely skinny or squat pixels.
