Given the old Core 2 Extremes they show that machine would be much better for MAME with a nice new Ivy Bridge CPU, 1 modern SSD, and a big HDD for ROMs

I remember asking the forums if adding an SSD would improve speed in MAME.

I also remember R Belmont telling me that Mame entirely loads itself and the roms/chds into memory, so having SSDs wouldn't make any difference. Obviously, the CPU you described would make a big difference, though.

I don't believe that he said it loads chd's into memory, because it doesn't do that.

That's a really strange interpretation of what I've said on the subject.

MAME doesn't entirely load itself into memory (just the parts necessary for the game you're actually playing), and CHDs similarly stream off the disk. An SSD won't make an interesting difference in either case (the I/O's just not heavy enough to stress even a slow laptop drive). And of course it won't affect the frame rate at all (which is what some people want to know). Where it *does* help is keeping your OS on it so boot times are fast and applications launch quickly.

He did at least at one time, when somebody here was zipping up his CHDs...

So long, and thanks for all the fish.

That is just because mame has auto loading of files from zip's, nothing in the chd code requires the entire chd to be in ram at once.

Thanks for clarifying, R. Belmont.

I knew I've seen that video before a long time ago and the 2006-2007 processor confirms it. No thanks, I prefer to stick to any Intel processor from 2011 and later.

Which is precisely why you shouldn't zip (or worse, 7zip) your CHDs - it defeats the normal streaming.
