Exception starting MAME on Win7
#297625 - 10/17/12 04:47 AM

Hi all,

I've just re-built the OS on my cabinet and I'm having problems running MAME. I'm getting an exception thrown when it starts.

Here is the output:

Code:

C:\MAME>mame pacman

Any ideas what might be going wrong?

I am using the Windows default driver for my video card. Could this be the problem? (It's an old ATI RV100 based card, I'll scrounge around and see if I can find a Win7 driver for it.)

You have a couple options:
- Find a better video card. That one seems a bit weak, to be honest. Like you said, if you can find a driver for Win7, that will likely enable DirectX3D.
- Use -video ddraw or -video gdi as alternatives to -video d3d

The RV100 series was the Radeon 7xxx cards. If you're running that card, how old is the rest of your hardware?

Here's the Microsoft requirements for running Windows 7...
http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows7/products/system-requirements
...though people have run Windows 7 on worse hardware, I'm sure.

Is your card an old first generation ArcadeVGA? If so, I'm pretty sure there aren't any Windows 7 drivers.

Also, if you're running 64-bit Windows 7, you're probably doubly screwed in the driver department with a card that old.

If it's a normal ATI card, then look here for a Vista or Windows 7 driver, if they have one...
http://support.amd.com/us/gpudownload/Pages/index.aspx

Are you using an arcade monitor? If so, you might want to consider Windows XP 64-bit edition (instead of Windows 7), along with CRT_EmuDriver and GroovyMAME. Check out the links in my signature below.

The system I'm using is a P4 with 512MB RAM.

Win7 x86 is running just fine on it.

I'm just using a regular VGA monitor, so no need for the special video card.

I was able to find a GeForce 6600 AGP card in my "pile 'o stuff" so I'm going to give it a try. I did verify that NVidia does have a Win7 driver for this card.

Thanks for the advice!

I found an old GeForce 6600 card that I can use in my system.

If that fails, I'll give the -video options a try to see if that fixes things.

Thanks for the information!

512MB? Holy crap. That's the absolute minimum to even get the Windows installer running.

If you open up task manager while sitting at the windows desktop, is there any free memory at all?

I have not opened task manager yet to check, but the UI responsiveness is just fine.

I did put in a GeForce 6600 and MAME no longer crashes so, moving in the right direction.

Now to see if I can scrounge some old memory for the machine and bump it up to 1GB at least.
